    Default Rehydrating your tobacco

To day I opened up my tobacco drawer and found that a good amount of my tobacco had dried out. So after doing some research I decided to try the wet paper towel in the jar approach. I've got 3 tobaccos that IMHO are too try, but in varying stages. The best being just a little too dry and the worst being crumbling to the touch. Ill keep yall posted on their progress.

I normally just spritz my pipe tobacco with distilled water, close the bag then shake the crap out of it and let it set in a cool spot for a day or two and if it's not too far gone, it will come back. Incidentally, you can do the same thing to your Swedish snus if it get's dry ;-) Good luck!

You might check with your local Tobacconist and see if they have humipacks, the shop I go to gives them away with purchase, you can toss those into your containers and that would bring the humidity back into the tobacco.

    +1 to distilled water.

There's bacteria, algae, etc. in any municipal water. It's mostly harmless for humans--at least in most places (don't drink the water, you know)--but it can grow in tobacco and ruin it.

I've done the paper towel thing, too. I rinse them out well, the last rinse in distilled water (they should probably all be in distilled water) squeeze as much as possible, then replace the towels once or twice a day as they brown from the tobacco.

It is better to use indirect hydration rather than actually wetting the tobacco, it allows more even hydration, I haven't had to hydrate mine but a wet towel over a bowl works well. If you store your tobacco in Mason jars it won't dry out.

This is the method I suggest for "large" amounts.
I also have put a slice of apple in a baggie with the tobacco and that keeps moisture up.

How far gone can it be and still re-hydrate?

What I used to do, get a sealed jar. To the lid of the jar glue a piece of sponge, maybe about a 1-1.5 inch cube. Put the tobacco in the jar, moisten the sponge, but not so wet that it would drip. Just damp. Screw the lid on tight, making sure the sponge does not directly contact the tobaccy. After about a day or so the tobaccy will be nice and hydrated.

I have about 29 oz of old Boswell blends. I got out of pipe smoking for a wile. Baught them in 08 but they have been in a sealed bag in a box in my clothes closet. Its a little dryer but not to bad. I'll be trying out that glued sponge to the jar trick. Good idea

If you have any small humidifiers for a desktop humidor, you can chuck one of those in an air tight glass jar as well. I just use the PG solution that I use for my cigars.
