Default Hello, and request for tips for a razor for a woman.

I've been reading here on and off, but decided to register. This seems to be a friendly place.

I have a moustasche, and use a Merkur Futur to keep it from spreading. I also found an old Gilette that I use for travel. It's light, collapsible and has the option of "concealing the blade" by screwing it together in an alternative way.

My girlfriend, who has no moustasche, took a liking to it, and says she likes safety razors. Any tips for a good beginner razor for her? I think it should be simple, and perhaps not too heavy. The grip on Merkur 20C seems to be good, and it looks stylish - but I need some input on what to look for when chosing a razor for shaving the legs.

My wife loved my Red Tip, but ended up liking one of my Techs better, thankfully. The Techs are fairly mild and lightweight. My wifes problem with the Red Tip, it was too aggressive for the knee cap and shin area. That's about all the feedback I can provide. Also, she did not like the Blue Star ladies Gillette, she hated the long handle, go figure.

Hi and welcome. I truly hope someone has more info than me, but I have heard the long handle Merkur is a good choice. I am sure others will pipe in. Also, I would call Charles at Enchante in Austin, as he is helpful, knowledgeable, and for years actually had mostly women as clients before the mid 90's.

Ah, thanks for the input! After some googling what sort of razor the Tech was, I realize it was a Gilette Tech razor that I have, and that she liked. It seems to be a pretty big family of razors, so I can't really place the exact model. They are not manufactured any more, am I right?

    Welcome to B&B.
Totally misread your post and initially thought you were a woman shaving her mustache, with a partner who also wanted one. Then finally my brain kicked in...
Anyways sorry I really can't help you out, but the posts above seem like they know what they are talking about.

A Merkur 23C would be my suggestion, although it is a fairly aggressive razor. If you are looking for something lightweight with a long handle, that can do both aggressive and mild, my suggestion would be a Slim Adjustable if you can find one in user condition. A post in the BST should go a long way towards solving that. That's how I got mine.

One of the lightest razors there is : Merkur Bakelit "Old school Plastic" if you want.
The blade needs some attention for the proper alignment when put in but other than that it give great shaves.

I love my Weber. L6 also has a long handle and gives a great shave with very little risk.

IIRC I've heard of a long handled Weshi is good but have not been able to find one, my wife loves her Blue Lady Gillette

+1, but glad we got it sorted. I'd like to suggest a Merkur 34HD. Nice and sturdy.

I'm going to go the other way and suggest not a "light" DE razor, but a small one. A razor with a little weight behind it is far easier to use effectively, especially for a beginner. Lighter requires a more agile and adept touch...and a higher level of concentration to avoid a boo boo. This is true of musical instruments, shotguns...and DE razors.

Small hands like small instruments...er, razors. My recommendation would be the Muhle R89, with the standard handle (not the GRANDE). Drop dead gorgeous and effective. It's elegant, perfect for a lady, IMO.

I use a straight razor on my lady's legs, but switch to an R89 around her knees (she prefers to have her legs shaved...by me). The R89 is her favorite razor.

Hah. Ha haha haha. Wow, you think you feel stupid? I still thought that to be the case until I read your post, and I was like "Ahhhhh. duh!" I was fascinated by this thread until you made me figure it out. Wow, it's late? What the heck is my body still doing up? My brain obviously went to sleep several hours ago.... :P

The Lady Gillette was made for women - but men can use it too. Don't know if you can find one in your country, though.

    And welcome to B&B.

    UPDATE:

I got her the Merkur 34HD. She likes it a lot, on account of being easy to clean and a good handle. As for blades, I think really sharp ones are best, but I don't think she has noticed many differences. The razor itself is very heavy and stubby. I borrowed it myself, and it's very nice but I am more comfortable with the Futur.

Any ideas on a good shaving cream? I just discovered Taylor's of Old Bond Street Eton College shaving cream, and the lather is excellent. Perhaps the Almond fragrance or the Lime? The Eton doesn't feel unisex enough. I've tried to sell the idea of lathering instead of using canned stuff, but she brought up the valid objection that the bowl would have to be enormous... Perhaps lather directly from the brush on the body?

I am in the exact opposite position with my Fiance. She is already sold on the brush and LOVES the smell of Cella but I cannot get her to drop her cart razor! She does lather directly on her legs and has no problem borrowing my brushes to do so! I am gonna buy her her own boar brush as she likes the feel of my Semogue 2000 a lot. So yes leg lather and try Cella imho.
