I am thinking of that nice warm stuff like at the barber. I am also thinking it should help keep the beard softened too. So how do I do this??

I have been using really hot tap water but it cools down really fast. Does it need to be hotter?

I start with it at about 200f, a bit cooler if face lathering. If mug lathering, i may pop the mug back into the microwave if it's cooling too fast.

Baring a scuttle, I used a double boiler set up in my pre-face lathering / pre-soap days. Make your lather in one of those small metal bowls and let it rest atop another glass or mug of really hot water.

I fill my mug with hot tap water, put the brush in, then stand it in a sink full of hot water while I shower/preshave prep. From what I read here, a scuttle with built in water reservoir does a nice job of keepng the lather warm for multiple passes. Dirtybird Pottery has a nice one which I just ordered. You can find reviews of these scuttles by searching the forum. Enjoy your shave!

Using very hot water can do your brush harm

Do you build lather on your face or in a lather bowl/cup?

What you are looking for is a scuttle. Does a great job of keeping lather warm.

Try this: Soak your brush in hot water in a heavy coffee cup filled enough to cover the bristles. Fill the sink with hot water. Put the cup in the sink. Shower. Drain sink, empty cup, refill sink and cup. Brush teeth. Remove brush from cup, let water drain out of brush (see Marco's videos). Lather brush. Pour water from cup, place brush in cup. Now soak face with hot water, kill 15-20 seconds. Lather face with warm lather. Put brush back in cup, make first pass, lather with even warmer lather. Repeat.

A scuttle is great for keeping the lather warm. However, if you use water that is too hot when making lather you may have trouble with your lather breaking down. Plus, why would you use boiling water on your skin. Warm or hot water is fine - but boiling water?
