Default A Few Rookie Questions About Aftershaves

I'm a new DE/Wetshaver and I am looking for a better aftershave routine. I have been using Nivea Aftershave Balm and while it works fine, it leaves my skin with a sticky kind of feeling after about an hour. So I have been looking into aftershave possibilities, but I am not sure which one I should go for. Ideally, I would like to not go out and buy all of them. So here is what I have been looking up.

    Feather Kanwa
    Trumpers Skin Food
    AoS Sandalwood Aftershave Balm
    Ogallala Bay Rum
    Generic/Name Brand WH

For reference, I already use an Alum Block immediately after my cold water rinse. Normally, the AoS balm is a shade too expensive for me, but I recently received a 20% off coupon from them.

Any help would be much appreciated

I woul recommend switching from a balm to a alcohol based a/s.
    Catalyst
    Tobs sandalwood
    Aqua velva
    Clubman
    Poraso
    Old spice
    Ect ect

Of the AS you mention, I only have experience with Ogallala..great stuff. I would add Speick, 4711, Proraso, and any of the Boosters line.

I would recommend you go to the grocery store and pick up the aftershave that you think smells the best: aqua velva, brut, skin bracer, pinaud etc. and use that. (skin bracer is the one that leaves my skin feeling the best out of the aftershaves that you can be in the store) If you tend to have dry skin you can mix the aftershave with a unscented moisturizing lotion. I used to just use the Nivea ASB, and after switching to using an alcohol aftershave (i mix it with the unscented lotion in my hands) my skin has been very grateful.

Until you pick up alternatives, try a bit less Balm and apply it with damp hands, usually stickiness is a sign of too much Balm. I'll second Catalyst and recommend a couple of cheapies, Mennen Skin Bracer or Aqua Velva Musk.

I also quit the Nivea balm and went to aftershave. I splash on witch hazel first. My favorite aftershaves are:
    Captain's Choice Bay Rum
    Ogallala (Bonanza pack)
Irisch Moos (After trying a sample I ordered a bottle. Should be a good one for spring & summer use)

+1 on leaving behind Nivea for the AS world. I recommend getting a tube (or three) of 444 balm, picking up a couple of AS's from your local drugstore (they're cheap enough!), and start experimenting.

Thanks for all the suggestions gents. I am going to stop by the store on Monday and see what I can pick up. Since the weather is getting warmer around here (Cincinnati), it is time to switch things up
