Hop on this one. I doesn't end until the 15th. That gives you quite a bit of time to mod one still...

Well my GD turned up today. 3 weeks from Hong Kong. Not too bad I guess.
The balde looks good to me, the grind looks even, and apart from the stabilisers needing to be ground down a little, it looks good.
I didnt realise how heavy they are!
It doesnt close straight in the scales though. Should I complain to the seller? LOL
Well I just extracted it from it's scales. Side cutters stright through the plastice, then snapped pin.
It isnt bent as such, however the blade is ground strange. flip it on one side, and the tang sits flush with the table. Flip it the other it sits proud by about 3mm at the end.
I wonder if I were to clamp it in the vice and give it a few love taps would it straigthen out? or do I just use an appropriate number of brass washers to take up the difference?
That's a pretty easy answer for me... If you only have one Gold Dollar, then washers. If you have a couple, then I'd try the vise..

Good point. It does seem it's only a small distance for it to bend though only 1.5mm. Washers might be the easiest for now, my only concern is that it might make the razor "too wide".....
Just to try my luck, I emailed the seller to see what their response is. I dont expect to get one, but you never know! :)
is it that brittle? It's only got to move 1.5mm at the very tip of the tang.
I wouldnt know how to make the scales skewed to suit... I'll space it out...
Ahh, chinese engineering at it's finest then. Spacers it is then.

Nothing to do with Chinese engineering. That is how razors are meant to be. If it could bend it wouldn't be hard enough to take an edge.
I tried to fix mine by grinding, but I didn't have much luck with that. In the end I used a washer only on one side. I still have to be a little careful when closing, but at least it doesn't catch.

No I meant with thier manufacturing processes, not the hardness! :)
Did the grinding help at all? I figure I wont be too upset if I destroy this one, as I would only be out $4.50. I spent more than that for breakfast!
Maybe a little. I think I kind of screwed up on the first try and took material off the wrong side. Then after I corrected that I didn't have much room to make the adjustments needed without removing too much metal. Schmeh! One washer works OK. It's not like it is for a paying client. Better to work this stuff out the cheap way.
Or you can just inlay it?
LOL, i'm not that skilled!
i withdraw my entry into the competition.....
i scaled it with a 100yr old set of plastic scales i had laying around and pinned it with stainless pinning....
honed it up with my coti... then put it on the welsh slate..... happily this rascal is still a amazing shaver..... amazing..
i would gladly send this to ANY of the big wigs over at that other site and let them tell me this chinese POS can't shave as well as any of their high dollar BS.......
here ya go fellas.... it is a shorty *(cause i dropped the damn thing on its spanish point) and i thinned the tang *(i am not happy with the stropping feel of this so i will be re-doing the scales with wood......
anyway ... best o luck fellas...

a nice walk in the woods helps me relax and relieves tension....
the fact i'm dragging a shovel and a body should be irrelevant...
The minimalist tang looks really cool, as well as how you ground the heel. I don't know man, I think you should stay in it man... might as well now that it's done right?

Yes you are, they were the first time ive attempted it and it worked well both times, just cut your front line to depth on both sides and grind it down carefully till there flat, i use a 5" grinder for everything (even woodwork, lol), but you could use a belt sander. the key is dip it in water as soon as it gets warm, DO NOT let it get hot, if it discolors you've got it to hot. Have a crack mate, that's only my 4 th resto, and if i can do it so can you.
I guess what have I got to loose..... (other than maybe a finger when my grinder flings the blade! LOL)
