To anyone in CONUS wanting to get into this at the last minute, starshaving.com carries Gold Dollar Razors. I ordered one out of curiosity two days ago and received it today.

I had to laugh when I saw it. Scales are atrocious, there are grind marks all over the tang, & the spine is sort of lumpy. I took some TP to lightly wipe the oil off of the blade and half of the "etching" came off!
I thought maybe some of what I had read about these was slight exaggeration but apparently not.

Still though...$7.00! I can put new scales on and if I can get it to take an edge you won't hear me griping!

I had a look on another forum last night and couldnt believe there rules on GD razors, it seems your not even allowed to discuss them because " there rubbish razors we dont want to endorse" Personally i wanted to tell them how wrong they are, but whats the point. I have now worked on 2 GD razors and yes when they arrive there basically rubbish, my 108 the "take two" had a very uneven grind both sides, there were problems in the spline, the shoulder fault and an uneven point, it was also slightly bent in the tang from the stamping, and as for the scales, lol i just melted them trying to drill the pins out (not that i would ever consider re using them, lol). But in saying all that, when you put a bit of time into them and new scales of coarse there a very good shaver, I will prob end up using these daily. Why risk our antiques everyday when for $4 and a bit of work you can have a razor as good as some of the best. I dont care what they think and its put me off there site, BECAUSE I'M A GD FAN!

Yes Otto, that's where I got mine. As I said in a previous post I "paid through the nose" for them but got 'em in 3 days. I just ordered more! Stupid me,, I should have just ordered 20 or so from the start. Now that I have what I need for the time being I might back off and order the $5.00 ones and let them show up whenever they do. I've got plenty to keep me busy till then. Then too,, why not support a business here. Really , what's 3 bucks?
Newtobengall, Your's were rubbish? Wow,, I feel lucky. Mine honed up right out of the plastic pouch no problem. Uneven contact with a hone? That only means your hone is TOO FLAT! Curved spines and tang? That's what the old bent scales you have lying around are for. And besides, the curved blade fits your face better. The scales they come with. Heck, they're brand new buddy. I swapped them for some old Blond Horn that were looking a bit shabby on some of my W&B's. Man, they're looking pretty spiffy now. You 'gotta start thinking out of the box. I'm thinking in a padded room.

I'm thinking of running a competition to see who can do the least to one and still have it shave well.

I got a 66 in the mail yesterday, and it centres properly in the scales, and the edge seems to almost sit flat on the hone! (well, my kitchen counter. I haven't tried to hone it yet). If I just spent a while on the 600 DMT to square up the spine a bit, and then honed it with the stabilisers hanging off the edge of the stone, I almost think that's all it would need.

Of course, now that I've jinxed it it will probably explode or something.

Oh,, you think I'm kidding? No, I really did reuse them. A guy sent me a TI at the beginning of the month. Blade only. He wanted me to hone it up so he could see if he liked it or not. Come on guy, it's a TI! So I had to fit some sort of scale on them just to hone it.
Now he claims he wants me to build a set of Cocobolo scales in the mean time. But for me to send him the razor with " some clean , decent looking scales just to try the razor out" . Because he was sure I had some nice clean old scales from restores that I wasn't using. But he didn't think he should pay for that.Just a hone.
Sure,, I'm sending you a nice looking razor with my scales or a nice set of vintage scales on it just for you to try out? Don't think so. So I fitted a set of the Gold Dollar scales to the TI and shipped it off to him. I'll be surprised if he actually sends it back for me to make the set of Cocobolo scales. Took him over a month just to pay me for the honing and fitting scales and shipping. Besides the fact that he has called me at least once a day, sometimes twice a day, since the beginning of the month to talk about WHO knows what, least of all the razor.
My momma don't raise no fool. And yeah, I'm still laughing over this arrangement. Almost a sin isn't it?

Sure,, with the price of oil lately I just hang my new GD's up on a string and let all the oil drip into a catch pan. I can then pour a quart or so into my snowblower,, lube all the hinges in my home,, oil my bicycle chain.. I'm resourceful like that.

'Cmon David,, do you think I do anything Half A$$ed?
Devalue a good razor? Heck,, it didn't even have scales! I helped it quite a bit in my humble opinion. At least now he can use it. That's like having a Ferrari without any tires. What good is it? I did him a favor and at least put recaps on it.

Wow, I would have told the guy to go pound sand and shipped the razor back to him... I think giving the guy GD scales was generous, and frankly he should be grateful to have a talented resource like yourself working on a razor for him... I do this stuff for fun and relaxation... I have no time for that kind of attitude... I would have made a pair of scales from popsicle sticks before giving him a serviceable set - even if they are GD scales.

@ Trick420 I was about to. I had the blade originally fitted with a nice set of faux ivory scales on the 6th. It's been sitting on my bench ever since. I got pissed after all his stalling and callling but wanting me to send it with no pay. So that's what gave me the bright idea to take back my scales and fit the GD's to it before sending it off after he finally sent some $.
OH,, and the only reason I can be so open with this is he was a member here for almost a month before he got banned. So I can write this.
Of course after that photo,, it's real and not retouched, that's what I sent... I'm sure I'll get banned. Just for the grossness of it. Hideous isn't it?

Well, now that I'm one set short on scales,, and the others are nearly dry with their new coat of Rustoleum,, I guess I'll have to take a bit more time to actually make up at least one set of scales to finish off my set.
Geez.. .and I was almost done. Hey,, wait! I can use the faux Ivory I was going to send with the TI! Ha.. I'm home free.
