That was a quote from the PBS Show Inside Natures Giant's. Did anyone watch that?

At another point, when the show explains that the digestive systems of sperm whales produce a stinky, waxy substance called ambergris which has historically been a sought-after ingredient in manufactured fragrances, the narrator tells viewers “You can still smell the rectum of a sperm whale in the most expensive perfumes.”

Wow! Wierd huh? Thought I'd share.

I didn't see that, nature shows have gotten too preachy for me, it just aggravates me. I prefer getting my messages in letter form. Watching on mute would be great.

I suppose that's true, although I have never thought of it exactly that way. The perfumes I have smelled that contain ambergris indeed smell good. Musk is another ingredient in perfumes that smells unappealing in its raw form.

I don't know much about perfume or perfume making. But I thought ambergris is whale vomit, how does it smell like whale's rectum? And how does he know what whale's rectum smells like?
