Default First Cold Shave!!! Cold Water Good!!!

Awesome. I actually made three changes.
    1) tried new shave soap from the local farmers market. Like the slickness... don't like that I need to relather mid shave.
    2) Tried one of my flea market scores... First Super Speed shave... Mild shaver.
    3) Cold water on brush and face...

    Quick WTG, quick XTG

Went for a presentable shave as I have been trying to see how smooth a shave I could get this last week. I had been dealing with some irritation.

    Cold Water Good!

I used cold water once and only once before. My grandfather, great person but with some batshit crazy theories, suggested that cold water keeps the blades sharper. I tore my face up something awful and have never used cold water again. If it works for you, great, but I'd never try it again.

Cold water shaving is something everyone should try, if only once. It seems to be accepted and liked by some, others, including myself, cannot tolerate it.

I found a couple years ago that cold shaving is a very good way to get a very nice and close shave, mind you that I only shave my legs and under arms still not all that difficult however. Cold tightens the dermal of your skin making it reveal more of the hair allowing for a closer cut, however AVOID any sort of pressure other than what the razor gives you as I have found it may cut too short giving rise to possible ingrown hairs as when your skin re warms to it's original temp it will 'fill' back out. Sorry if that last bit is a little cryptic, but I think you will figure it out after a little thought.

Cold is my way of doing things though in winter I practically freeze lol, however I found for myself that hot shaving is uncomfortable at best and I get more frequent burn. I just soak in the tub and allow the hair to soften, once I am ready to shave I apply a ice cold towel to the areas to be shaved for a few minutes, lather up and proceed using all cold water even on my razor.

It is so cold now here up North that in the morning, when the room temperature is at its lowest, the mere thought of a cold shave dejects, no matter how good it might be...

Glad that it worked out for you, and that you don't mind the cold water.

Not for me though, give me at least warm or better every time.

Out of curiosity, I shaved using cold water exclusively for one month. My results overall were excellent, with some minor quibbling about lathering some soaps. In any case, it is a more effective method of shaving than its more trumpeted counterpart, hot water shaving.

Hopefully we all know that wrapping a hot towel around your face will not "open your pores". (No more than cold water will close your pores.) Scalding hot water will, however, scald (verb,
to burn or affect painfully with hot liquid or steam). Useful if you are trying to channel Tom Coughlin pacing the Green Bay sidelines. Not so useful if you are trying to achieve an irritation free shave.

It's called wetshaving, so water is a very important component. But with regards to temperature, I find that I can consistently achieve the best results using the middle path, lukewarm water.

I find using cold water or at best room-temp water reduces irritation and the likeliness of nicks and cuts. I've never used hot water and not gotten cut.

Congrats. My theme: warm water in our version of winter in Florida and cold water in summer.

I remember hearing a tip about rinsing your razer in cool water when it was hot out and tried it one summer in Arkansas. It was okay. Maybe I'll try a lukewarm shave and see how that goes.

Hmmm lots of people seem to like this... might give it a go tomorrow. Might miss the comfort of the warm/hot water, though!

DougieB, glad to hear you got awesome results. I've seen a few threads on cold water shaving on this forum and decided to try it these last 2 weeks. I've had great results from cold water shaves. Dare I say even better quality results.

Cold water doesn't work for me. I used to do the scalding water in a towel deal but have found that mildly hot (~ 100 to 102) is perfect, hot enough to work the whiskers but not hot enough to scald or damage my skin.

cold water thus far is unheard of for me. but guess whos gonna try it out his next shave? yup thats right. me. my only concern is cleaning the blade. i generally fill the sink with hot water and while shaving swish the blade around to remove the hair and lather. i guess cold water would do the trick just as well

I love using cold water for shaving. My skin loves it even more.
