    Default First whipped dog strops

Last night I ordered my first strops. I got two of Larry's $8 blemished strops. Seemed like a good deal he said that they are the same as his regular ones but they have cosmetic blemishes. I figured this would be just fine for my first ones because I have heard that you will eventually nick them and I would rather nick a cheapie than a expensive one. Especially if they accomplish the same goal. I will be finishing on my vintage coticule, and these should be all I should need to get shaving, right?

Should work just fine. And when you nick it, big deal.

LOL rich man strop? Gotta hand it to Larry, a very inventive guy who is doing great things to increase our ranks.

Larry is kind of like that drug dealer that gives you your first hits for free or cheap. Then before you know it you have a full-blown addiction.

It looks well made, many english bridle strops are twice the price.

I bought 3" wide raw leather from him to make my own strops and it works as well as anything else with a similar finish.

If I object that I charge even for the first hit, will that refurbish my low life drug dealer rap? :)

I guess the Rich Man strop is something new. The Poor Man's kit gives you everything you need for now, you will get to the point when your razor will need to get rehoned.

Larry really is a heck of a guy though. I bet we traded 10 PM's and emails before I invested my 20 dollars! I will be trying some of his knots and maybe even his hones, if nothing else I will take him up on his honing lessons.

LOL Larry !! I hope you weren't offended. But seeing as how I am 9 shaves in on my straight journey with your fine product, and am already planning further purchases which I wouldn't have, if you didn't have such a great entry point, I'm wondering if a full-blown straight razor addiction might be forming because of your enabling.

But seriously Larry, I think the other vendors that sell the TIs and scrupleworks (sp?) strops and other high-end stuff should cut you a check. There are many who are on this forum, (definitely me), going down this road b/c of your product and service that allowed them to jump in without breaking the bank and their questions answered upon opening their package.

    Kudos to you.

Being not at all serious, do you remember the old time silent movie chase scenes where the speedometer creeps higher and higher, finally it makes a complete circle and starts climbing again from 0? You guys buy, then move on, buying more and more expensive equipment from others. When will the speedometer rotate back to zero? :)

If I recall correctly, Larry's Poor Man strops don't come with a cotton/linen/insert fabric here component. Might be good to get a fabric component, as stropping on linen after a good coticule honing can help out your edge.

Of course, it seems there's some back and forth on the forums about whether the fabric component is useful or not (although it is generally acknowledged as a good thing on coticule.be, and I like how it works for me). Best thing to do is try it for yourself at some point to see if you like it or not; it shouldn't set you back too much.

This is why I got two, and also got free shipping since I bought two. I figured I would nick one but if I nick both I haven't lost much.

And why should a noob like me buy the poor man's strop? I'm agile, have good dexterity, and decent hand-eye coordination. I'd never nick or cut a strop, right? I mean, what's there to it? Move, roll on the spine, and move again. But look what I just did - and the scary thing is how fast it happened and how cleanly it sliced into that leather...
