    Default Wanting to re-knot my Vulfix 404 badger/boar brush

    I have a Vulfix 404B which is a mixed badger and boar bristle brush. I have fallen out of love with the knot and want to replace it with a badger knot. I do know that many buy this brush just for the handle and re-knot them. Does anyone have experience with re-knotting this brush? What size knot would I need for it to fit properly? What is the process of reknotting it? Who on this board re knots brushes regularly?

    first you mesure the base of the current knot to figure what size it is.then you cut the old hair off and, i like to use a forstner bit to drill the old knot out with.then you decide if you want ot go with the same size knot or if the handle will allow you to expand the hole to a bigger size.i recoment the golden nib for a new knot.great knots at a reasonabl price and great quality.http://www.thegoldennib.com/index.ph...ndex&cPath=5_9
    then you pick some waterproof epoxy and glue the new knot in place.there are numerous threads detailing the whole process here.and always remeber;pics or it didnt happen......welcome to the madness;]

    Where do I find a 21mm knot, it seems I can only find a 20 or 22mm.

    The hair quickly expands out above the plug, easily filling the opening. Too tight and you can't set the plug low enough for an acceptable loft.

    I like to wait until the old knot is completely removed before I measure the hole diameter for a new knot. Sometimes you find things such as metal rings around the base of the knot that can be removed and allow for a larger diameter knot. If you're between standard sizes, usually it's easy to open the hole up a millimeter or two to take the larger size. It's much easier to visualize the final product without the old knot in place. Like eastomjac said, there's all kinds of threads here on this forum that will show you the necessary steps, and we're always here to answer any questions or provide advice. We do love photographs, so feel free to document the process.

    Good luck!

    The knot of the Vulfix 404 Grosvenor mixed boar/badger is 23mm, and not 21mm as stated above.
    So, you have two options:

    - Use a 22mm knot from TGN;
    - Enlarge the hole in the handle with a dremel and use a 24mm knot.

    Have fun!

    I widened a Vulfix 2233 with a small drum sander, maybe 3/8" diameter, going in circles to gradually widen it. The handle material didn't seem much harder than some of the vintage handles I've restored.

    thanks. i think i'm gonna stick with the 22mm, and get a 22mm Finest Badger Knot Fan XH from TGN, as I don't have any full FAN brushes. set it at about 48mm (per some advise) and have a nice, new, badger hair, face lathering machine.

    I did managed to get the knot out no problem, with the "boiling" method. popped right out. only a bit of glue residue to scrape/even out for a shelf.
