  1. Default gillette razor question

As a merkur HD user for the past year (which I enjoyed), I decided to venture into some of the vintage Gillette razors. I discovered the Gillette Tech with a feather blade is the perfect combination for my rough beard and sensitive skin.

I then bought a 1956 super speed and a 1959 fat boy to continue my quest.

I noticed I have been getting some rather rough shaves with the superspeed and fat boy (with a setting at 1). I have been using a Swedish Gillette with these razors since they seem a little more agressive than the tech. What do these razors have in common or how are they are different from the HD and tech?

Do they share a common variable? please help. As I will like to adjust my technique to enjoy them.

I would suggest trying the adjustable on 3 rather then 1 or even on 5. The Feather is a great blade and IMHO the Gillette Swede is even better. With the razor set on 1 you don't have enough blade exposure. Set it on 3 or 5 and let the weight of the razor do the cutting.

    thanks for your replies.

Slant fan, I am getting the same rough shave from the Fat Boy and the Super speed (which is not adjustable.) I cant quite put my finger on it but it seems that it is an angle issue. I am not sure.

I use my fatboy on 3 and get a great shave. Still have to try bumping my slim up to 4 or 5. I also have problems with the SS although I haven't used them enough. The R Tech is fine, so I don't really understand why I have a problem with the SS.

Have you changed you prep lately?

I know it has been said a million times here, but there's not a single razor that will give good shave without good prep. You can test this by using any razor without lather .

Take the extra time to soak your beard thoroughly and I think you'll get much better results.
