I've been wondering. How do they shave in prison? Electric? Hope none of you guys have first hand experience.

I think they can also use safety razors, but you do hear of cases where they break out the blades and melt them into a piece of plastic (say a toothbrush handle) to make a "shank".
I don't know this from personal experience - thankfully, but I don't see the prison system buying inmates Braun electrics.
Also, this seems to be confirmed on PrisonPete's blog - who knew (google is a powerful tool!).

In the past, Gillette made prison razors that required a key to unlock the razor before the DE blade could be removed.
Chris.
In our county jail they can "check out" or borrow a single edge plastic razor for a few minutes and shave with hand soap, sampoo, or buy some Palmolive type stuff in a tube at the commissary.
Be well,
Chris

I think I would just grow a beard. After all, I wouldn't want to look good for anyone in there.![]()

It's interesting you mention prisons and how ingenious the prisoners seem to be. Not shave related but prison related, I work in the lighting industry and we as a company outfit all of the new and refurbished prisons all over the country all the time, it seems to be a full time job.
Anyway you would be amazed at what lengths we have to go to when designing a new light fitting whether it be an over bed light or a cell light with built in nite lights etc, to design something that is prisoner proof.
They obviously have a lot of time on their hands to think out different ways of getting into a vandal proof light fitting.
Cheers

I don't think beards are generally allowed in prison. In fact I think I remember reading where a muslim prisoner tried to sue the state or county where he resided claiming that forcing him to be clean shaven was a violation of his religious freedom.
Also, long hair and a long beard can be a decided disadvantage in a fight. Trust me on that one!
And no I've never been in prison. Speeding tickets are the extent of my interaction with law enforcement. And I aim to keep it that way!

They give you cheap generic 2 blade razors that you may use supervised once a week on Friday. You only have water as a lubricant. In addition the razors are not cleaned. Most prisoners have beards of some kind.
In response to the above comment some prisons may not allow beards I don't know for sure, but I know that many do allow them and the majority of the population is bearded.

I did find this article http://www.freedomforum.org/template...cumentID=13195 It's about an Hasidic Jew serving a life term in Ohio.
"Prison officials say Flagner was treated no differently than other inmates. The state's prison regulations require inmates to keep beards and sideburns neatly trimmed, within a half inch of the skin, so that they cannot hide weapons, drugs or other illegal items."
The issue of hiding contraband didn't enter into my mind. I thought perhaps it was a prisoner safety issue or maybe to keep one prisoner easily identifiable from another, especially in the event of an escape. Shaving ones beard off can radical change your appearance. Whenever I have worn a full on mountain man/viking beard and shaved it off It was shocking to see my face in the mirror.![]()

I know that there was a post about old prison gillettes on here. They looked like a normal gillette TTO (similiar to a superspeed I think, but I could be totally wrong on the specific razor), but they didn't have the knob to open and take out the blade. Instead, there was a key that went into the bottom to open the butterfly top. I assume this allowed the guard to exchange the blade while keeping it secure while in prisoner hands...

bic 2 blade disposables, i think you can get a 10 pound bag for like $5
i work at a prison in georgia.in georgia inmates are not allowed beards, hair and mustache are to be short and neatly trimmed, for i.d. and hygeine reasons.they are issued a bic type disposable razor, small bar of soap, small roll-on deodorant, small toothpaste weekly.they can buy brushless cream(palmolive type).in 20 years i've seen one inmate with a shaving brush.if an inmate has a problem with ingrown hairs he can go to the barbershop and get shaved with hair clippers.usually not very sharp and done by annoyed inmate barbers.
