Default Not really a soap issue---but it's related...

I haven't been an active poster but I do follow the board as time allows.

Ok guys so here's my question... Wet shaving - by defintion involves water and soap, maybe some oil, all of which are SLIPPERY. Add in the fact that many of us shave in the shower. And breakable bowls are a nightmare - aided in this by the fact that I have a minor hand tremor which arises at the most inopportune times... like this morning with what was a very nice pottery bowl in my hand.. S

So why is it bordering on impossible for me to find a decent quality shaving bowl out of a material other than porcelain or a similar ceramic? The wooden ones are all too small from what I read and the metal ones shed heat. Marvey makes a hard rubber shaving mug - that I have several of for various soaps in the rotation - but I want an open bowl where I can really whip up a great lather.

Certainly someone somewhere has found a bowl that is designed as a shave bowl and is shatterproof... Anybody able to make any suggestions?
I've tied hijacking some of the corelle junk and other pieces out of the kitchen but the shape is just wrong.....

My scuttle has a glazing dink on the bottom of the handle and I am waiting for it to dry thoroughly before applying nail polish to seal it up

SO.... I still need a bowl to lather in while scuttle is sitting upside down drying..

Rummaging around in the kitchen yesterday I came up with 2 stainless gravy bowls in 2 sizes. I grabbed the larger one and it worked super fine for lathering.

Maybe a trip to your local thrift store is in order. If you can't find one there, you can go to any larger restaurant supply store and they should be stock items.

Since you're in the shower anyways, why do you need the bowl to retain heat?

I have that mug in the light wood color, and it is amazing!! Plenty big for lathering directly on the puck! I have the same issue as the op, being really clumsy, I fully know that any ceramic mug will eventually meet it's maker through an war with a hard surface. This mug is the answer to that conundrum.

Hart also makes a lathering bowl as well (which I haven't tried):

I'd go with a Tupperware or Rubbermaid Plastic bowl... or face lather.

I am glad that the Marvy mug works for you. Several on here have said that Marvy shaving pucks don't lather any better than a piece of wood.

I use a black cereal bowl I bought at Target. I think it's probably unbreakable. It works great, it's the perfect size, and the black allows me to really see the quality of the lather as it builds.

He's refering to the green rubber mug, not the soap.

I had some already hanging around, and so haven't priced them lately, but Nalgene 4oz Wide Mouth Polycarb or Poly Pro Jars.

I have used them for Williams, VDH, Vintage Surrey. The also fit Conk Soap rounds, others you would have to measure the puck and decide. The nice thing is if you drop them they just bounce, perfect for the shower(altho I still prefer sticks). These can usually be gotten at REI or similar outdoors type store, tho' I am sure the price will be better online.

    Hope that helps!!

Cool idea on the polycarb jars...just what I need an excuse to go into REI and spend some $$. I've never used the Marvy soap, just the mug which I like. Will say I wish it came in other colors so I coul easily tell which was which when I have various soaps going. The tan one they make is plastic and I don't like it.

I knew that. I was trying to be ironic and mentioning that the cups are better than the pucks that Marvy sells. I was hoping that the smilie would get the point across but I do have a dry sense of humor sometimes and some of my intended to be funny remarks don't come across that way. My apologies.
