So if you visit B&B on any sort of regular basis I am sure you have seen all the (well justified) praises of Larry @ whippeddog.com. I know Larry doesn't sell high end flashy straights (at least not to my knowledge) but I would love to see some of the sight unseen razors he has sent the folks here at B&B. I have an order in for one of his sight unseen kits and anxiously await my package. Please help me get through the next few days of waiting with some sight unseen straight porn. As always...thanks ladies & gents!

I totally get what you mean... Having said that, I have seen some of your stuff and it seems you too can appreciate appearance as well as performance. I realize I am new to straights and the whipped dog sight unseen kits are not meant to be visually pleasing. I started this thread however in hopes of seeing some of the sight unseen razors that Larry sends out, not to get advice on shaving (although I am open to PMs or other threads with any/all advice on shaving with straights). I can appreciate razors of all qualities can't I?

Ouch's post could be described as blunt and cantankerous, but he makes a good point. A pretty razor with a crappy edge is useless. That said, there is nothing wrong with appreciating a beautiful piece of craftsmanship.

I totally understand and agree that any/all new straight shavers should care more about technique and having a properly honed blade. I wasn't trying to start a thread for shaving advice. I merely wanted pictures. No offense was taken at all. I realize I have a huge amount to learn from a large number of B&B members and will always gladly take their advice.

Of course looks matter- I agree with that 100%. And when I select a razor, looks are way up the list of considerations. Way up.

Rest assured, you will acquire some beautiful blades, but only if you stick with this form of shaving. The only way that will happen is if you're able to make it work for you, and that requires a shave ready blade and not much else. So when you start, that should be the only thing that matters. Mind you, I never had any dealings with Larry, nor have I ever seen one of his blades in person, but he seems to have garnered a lot of fans and praise.

You're not kidding when you speak of appreciating razors of all qualities. Some of my humblest razors hold a dear spot in my heart and are, in terms of performace, the equal of blades costing 10X as much. Should the day come when you consider yourself a seasoned veteran, you'll look back fondly on you earliest acquisitions. I look back upon my good old days (that were not all that long ago) when I could purchase a near mint, shave ready razor for as little as $15. I have some Koeller, Geneva, and Shumate blades that I bought for a song that may look very plain but terrific shavers. I'm glad I had those before I bought something fancy that I wasn't able to handle. In any event, don't worry- as with everything in this hobby, eventually you'll get them all. Before you know it you'll be agonizing over which color horn to get on you TI.

Thanks for that Ouch... Very well put! I agree 100% with everything you said. I think part of the reason I started this thread was so that some of the newer folks can get an idea of what an affordable straight razor looks like that is also "shave ready". There are so many threads with these GORGEOUS and EXPENSIVE straights. I have never seen any of Larry's razors but I know a lot of people are ordering these "sight unseen" kits and I have a sneaking suspicion that these straights Larry is sending out aren't all that hideous. I think it might give some of the newer folks to straights a good idea of what to expect when ordering one of his sight unseen kits. While surfing around various places with straight stuff I have seen some straights that are less than perfect that people rave about. I was kind of hoping to have a picture heavy "not aesthetically perfect/good shaver" razor thread. Thanks again for your input. I can't wait to look back on my early acquisitions with fondness and great memories of great shaves.
