    Default The Monday "Mourning" Shave

Although I am a vendor, I am also a hobbyist and collect (or is it hoard) vintage soaps, blades, razors etc. There are so many good shaving items that are no longer in production and more and more great items are dropping by the wayside every year either through reformulation or discontinuation. I like to devote Mondays to using these out of production items and dub it the Monday "Mourning" Shave where I pay homage to the "dearly departed". If you would like to join me, please post your shaves in this thread.

    Monday "Mourning" Shave

    Razor: Wilkinson Sticky*
    Blade: Polsilver
    Brush: Simspon Douglas*
    Pre-Shave: Musgo Real Glyce Lime
Soap: Penhaligons Blenheim Bouquet (Tallow Version)*
    A/S: Vintage Yardley*

Now that the holidays are over, I am back to my regular routine of using mainly discontinued (and missed) shaving items on Mondays -Something I dub the Monday "Mourning" Shave. Everything marked with an * is dearly departed.

I enjoyed an excellent shave followed by a refreshing splash of Yardley aftershave. I believe that the aftershave is from the 1960's and am amazed that it is still good.

Very nice idea. Today I added vintage Yardley soap and Aqua Velva to my routine.

    Monday, January 9th

    Razor: GIBBS Click Pen*
    Blade: Schick Chromium*
    Brush: Simpson Ehsan*
    Pre-Shave: Musgo Real Glyce Lime
    Soap: Old Spice*
    A/S: Trumper Marlborough*

I enjoyed a fine shave from products that are no longer in production. The Simpson Ehsan ginned up a fine lather from the Old Spice soap and the Gibbs Click Pen adjustable loaded with a fresh Schick Chromium blade mowed down the stubble with ease. A splash of Trumper Marlborough (no longer available as an aftershave splash) and I am ready for the day.

    * indicates that the item is no longer in production.

Now that is what I call a Mourning shave. Everything on your list except your pre-shave soap is out of production. Trumpers Marlborough splash? Sounds nice.

For today's Mourning shave I decided to go with a puck of C&E sweet almond oil soap. This soap was popular here around the time I joined B&B. Both the soap and the cream has been discontinued. It's to bad. They were both very nice products.

It is too bad. I never had a chance to try the C&E Sweet Almond Oil soap but I have used the Sienna.

I am looking for a few more vintage aftershaves to add variety to my "Mourning" shaves. If you have one that you would be willing to sell, please send me a PM.

Great thread Phil. In honour of your request for using dearly departed shave goods, Monday next will bring a shave with MEM English Leather shave soap. Yes it is tallow. And yes, it is on a level with AOS. I have some Avon Leather a/s I will follow it up with.

    Cheers, Todd

Hey Phil, look at these. I think you may be interested. And yes boys, I do have one more waiting for some interesting ideas.

    Cheers, Todd

PS: I thought I should add some additional information. The cream looks a bit odd in the last photo. Let me assure you, there is nothing wrong with it and it has NOT been used. When I got it a few years ago it had been sitting sideways(both jars to boot) and had run up against the lid. I always check the contents when I buy stuff like this. So I took my fat little finger and pushed it down where it belonged and as you can see from the jar opening it left a sort of "smudge" of cream on the inside edge. Just wanted to make things clear.

I have been stocking up for my "mourning shaves". This week I received several vintage aftershaves including a back-up Yardley, Houbigant Fougere Royale, Kings Men, and Avon Island Lime. The C&E Sweet Almond Cream is on the way. Bring it on!

I am taking part in the Cobra Classic Tour so had to deviate a bit from my "Mourning" shave theme today. I was still able to use several discontinued items (marked with an *)

    Monday, January 23rd

    Razor: Cobra Classic
    Blade: Feather Pro Blades
    Brush: Simpson Douglas*
    Pre-Shave: Musgo Real Glyce Lime
Soap: Vintage Trumper Violet (Tallow Version)*
    A/S: Avon Island Lime*

This was my first use of the Cobra Classic. I was a little reluctant at first as it has a reputation for being super aggressive. I did not find it aggressive at all...rather it reminded me more of a more solidly built injector razor. I enjoyed a great, no drama shave. What some people call aggression, I call efficiency. It is true that I can get away with one less pass when using the Cobra but I achieved a BBS shave with zero irritation. Now excuse me while I go shopping for a Cobra Classic...RAD has been reactivated.
