Default cracking open a Simpson brush?

Has anyone done this in order to plant the knot in a better handle?

    Blasphemer!! Kill the witch!!!
    (sorry, couldn't resist)

Nope, I can't recollect anyone doing that before. It might be better to sell your brush on the BST and find another with similar knot dimensions in a handle you like.

Not sure if you can buy knots from Simpsons or not (no pun intended).

Shavemac sells knots, so does TGN

You would be better off buying the knot you want/need rather than destroying a valuable brush.

Selling the Simpsons on B/S/T should get you more than enough $$$ to buy whatever knot you want to use.

Depends on the Simspon and the Shavemac knot in question. I'm learning that the hard way

I have sent a few emails to Simpons and they will not sell just the knot.

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking but I have removed a knot from a Chubby 2. My son dropped his and it had a big chip that could not be repaired. My grandson is still at the age where he thinks I'm a god of some sort and told his Dad to take it to Grandpa to get it fixed. I put the handle in a vise, slowly applied pressure and eventually was able to crack the handle enough to get the knot out. It was not easy to get the knot free. That's as far as my talent could take me and I sent the knot to Rudy Vey for a new handle. Rudy made a nice replacement handle for it and reset the knot.

Simpson will not sell the knots individually, but I've seen some pretty lovely reknots of their old handles.

It's doable, but you need to be very careful. Saw away as much of the handle as you can, then chip/sand/dremel away the rest.

Just to explain my logic here. TGN knots are quite decent, especially in 2-band, but the 3-band silvertips are not at the level of Simpsons. I could gamble on a Shavemac knot (total unknown to me), but what I've been looking at cost more than a Simpson with handle, especially if I get a second-hand one.

There are some TGN's that rival Simpsons IMO. To each his own though, it can be done.

Silvertip Grade A is pretty equal to Simpsons Best IMO.. I can't compare anything to Simpson's 3 band super as I only have Simpsons 2 band super. What type of Simpson are you thinking about De-knotting?

Possibly a Duke 2 or Rover. My experience, albeit limited, is that TGN knots are not nearly as dense.

You will be pretty safe getting a 3 band D01 from Bernd at Shavemac.

Yeah, maybe it's time to bit the bullet. The 22mm is $113.

Yeah, I got the price list from Shavemac yesterday. It is hard for me to justify paying $113 for a Shavemac DO1 knot when I can get the Simpson Duke 3 brush for $110. I own a Duke 3 and love it. It is plenty dense though I understand there is some variation between each brush knot and density is somewhat subjective. That being said, unless one gets a crappy Duke, I can't imagine many folks disputing the Duke's density. I have a Duke 2 on the way as the Duke 3 is a little big.
