Took a step back and didn't like it....

I have been patiently learning the skills of lathering (soap) and multi-pass shaving using a cartridge razor for a few weeks now with ever improving results, but today I was running very late.

Out came the old can of gel and I shaved just like I used to, fast presentable but Yuck. I never realised how bad my "normal" shave was till now.

I look forward to a smooth check and jaw and a pleasant scent tomorrow.

Good prep with good old fashioned soap/cream and brush trumps the canned stuff!!

Ask someone kind for the DE razor for Christmas. You know that you want to! That is the next step and is also a very important part of the puzzle.

I can relate. Like you, when I first started with brush and soap I still used the cartridge razor. I took a trip about a week later, and just left the can of gel in my suitcase, rather that pack my soap, brush, mug, etc. When I used the gel next morning, it felt like I was slathering cream cheese on my face, it was that dry and stiff! Yuck. I had gotten used to real lather pretty quickly.

BTW... when I travel now, I've learned from this forum to just use a stick of Tabac, carry my brush in a large pill bottle, and take along some cream for superlather, in case the water is hard.

I found a great deal on a DE I have been stalking, so ordered it last night. A Jagger de86911 in black - with the octagonal handle, looks great and should be less slippery.

I will when traveling with carry-on still pack a cartridge (at least it's an EJ but a handle that packs a cart....long story, misunderstanding by wife when I asked her to get me an EJ razor). So I pack the cart, brush and proraso green tube. Regardless of where I'm traveling to I know that the big green will still lather even in harder water.

What I won't do is go back to canned goo. Ever.
