Default Using soaps and creams in a mug

Hello. I started with the proraso tube and would put an almond sized squeeze into my mug. Now I have several other creams and soaps that come in their own bowl like container. Do I spoon out a small amount and put it into my mug or do I use my brush to build up the lather right there in the container that these other creams and soaps come in? I am not face lathering. Is there an advantage or disadvantage to using a separate mug or just working up a lather in the bowl that the soaps or creams come in?

Generally, building lather directly on the puck is considered a bit wasteful - you end up plowing through a lot more product on each shave.
That said, more product isn't always a bad thing, especially for beginners.

Most of us who bowl lather keep a separate bowl for that purpose only. 100% personal preference, though.

With your current setup it seems like you would continue to build lather in your mug (though a bowl might work better). Don't be so quick to write off face lathering though. I gave it a whirl after reading so many people on here using it to build lather and I'm not going back to a bowl...

I use an old collar stay and scoop a small amount of cream in my mug. Works great for me.

The only tub of shaving cream I have is TOBS sandalwood. I just load my brush from the tub and lather in my bowl. Seems to work the way it's supposed to.

When I use creams I scoup out a small amount on a popcycle stick and place that in a bowl. From there I start to build a lather and then finish on my face. Seems to work for me.

Can you explain the loading it on your brush from the tub?

Just put your brush in the tub and twist it and it will pick up the cream. I find it easier to just dip my finger in it and get an almond sized amount and then rub it on my brush and then go to making lather in my mug.

With creams in tubs, just pick up a bit with your brush. For creams in tubes, squirt out a little dab right in the brush. Brush should already be holding some water. Now for face lathering, go to your face. Work it around. Re-wet the brush and work it some more. Add some pumping and twisting action and continue until you are happy with the lather. For bowl lathering, basically same thing except you do it in a bowl and then daub the lather on your face. I prefer face lathering. It helps prep the skin and whiskers.

For soaps, similar. Load brush with water, flick off excess. Go to soap, pick some up by swirling the brush around, 2 or 3 dozen strokes. Go to face or bowl and go for it.

Look for the videos on youtube.
