Very nice.
I miss Jake again.
I miss Jake again.
When my lab was a pup and I took the knothead to my aunt and uncle's pond for the first time, I had every intention of tossing a retrieving dummy into the shallow water and walking in slowly with him. You know, really take it slow and make it fun for him. Well, I got him out to the pond, turned my back for a second to get his retrieving dummy and I heard a SPLASH! Just like that, Kody had jumped right in and started swimming. He had never been in or around water before, but you would have thought he was part fish the way he took to it. Since then, we've hunted waterfowl a lot together and I always give him some time after picking up decoys so that he can swim. I've watched that big ox break ice until he had a hole about ten feet in diameter, and then swim in circles in that hole just to be swimming. Geez, I love that dog.
As for the canoe part, you might want to practice with the dog and canoe on dry land first. Then if that works alright and your lab stays pretty good, maybe move into some shallow water. Hope it works out well for ya!
what a handsome fella. did you train him to hunt waterfowl or did he take to it naturally? I'd like to train my Lab to be a hunting dog but don't know what's required for this type of discipline
