Default Best Colognes for a Teen?

Another post under my belt, definitely making headway :):

I was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for fragrance for a teenager. This is one of those things I never quite can get right... I've gone through stages, Burbary, Dirty English(xmas gift... lol), even Coolwater and such.

However maybe the cologne experts might be able to help:

I'm looking for a fragrance that isn't over powering like I intend to join a motorcycle gang, yet nothing that screams "Fairy."(Not saying this saying this to sound like a bigot..) Something to fit a reserved scholarly personality. Something that casts a mature yet not Senial impression(fits the personality: Pris and Proper, Intelligent, Yet not quite ready for the Geriatric Facility!)

Sandalwood tends to be conservative and not overpowering, without being "foofy".

The trick with cologne is to apply it sparingly to the pulse points, and reapply mid-day. Putting on twice as much in the morning won't last any longer, but it will get you branded "That cologne guy"

So you mean taking a quick dunk in a cologne filled pool won't make it last all day? :) Lol.

    Bingo.

Big difference between aftershave and cologne (and there's a few in between).
Cologne is more like a woman's perfume. Applied properly, a small bottle can last a year or more. Just a dab on a fingertip applied to the wrists, center of the chest, behind the ears, and the throat.

Aftershave? Ya... it's got a very low level of scent and typically fades within a couple of hours. It is intended to splash on.

Personally, I only use cologne when we're going out some place nice. Daily driver is an aftershave.

How do you dress? To me, fragrances are more easily matched to an attire than an age bracket (but keeping age in mind is still important).

For instance, I'm wearing collar and tie today, so I'm wearing Montale's Arabian Leather.
If I were in jeans and a collared shirt, probably Armani Code or Rochas Man.
Dress shorts and a polo? Eau Sauvage or Davidoff Zino

Also what is your personality type? You don't need to go into some deep self-evaluation, but are you extroverted or introverted? Serious or casual?

As I am a HUGE TV addict, I'll ask if there are any actors/characters of the screen (big and small) with whom you identify. This is not to say you will copy their style, but rather give us (and yourself) an idea of what types of fragrance you should test.
The problem with Arsenal is that they always try to walk it in!

I read this and first thing I thought was Tam Dao by Diptyque. It's a sandalwood with a lot of character. Very different than other sandalwoods in that it doesn't have a soapy smell to me and the scent evolves quite a bit. My next thought was something from the Guerlain family. Maybe Habit Rouge? Or, perhaps Kouros Frachier if you want to amp it up a little tiny bit. Best thing is grab yourself some samples and see what you like. Also, if you try a fragrance one day and don't like it, don't toss it just yet. Revisit it again a couple of months later.

I have way too many fragrances (way, way too many). I also have three sons around your age. The one they reach for the most is L'Occitane's Eau des Baux. They also like Geir Ness quite a bit. Good luck.

How is it possible to have too many fragrances?

You need to get him something that he can take into adulthood - otherwise by definition it'll be something aspirational. There are some fragrances that travel the years fairly well, regardless of whatever controversy or bad copy they generate in the blogosphere. I personally think Zino and Cool Water by Davidoff are excellent choices. Also, Grey Flannel, Allure Homme, Green Water, Égoïste, Lapidus pour Homme, 1-12, Azzaro PH, Pierre Cardin Pour Monsieur, Obsession for Men, and Unbound for Men are all worthy choices.

Azarro or Egioiste for a teen? NO WAY. These are old man scents.

What's an "old man" scent? Is a classic scent automatically an "old man" scent? Or, the fact that a fragrance has stood the test of time? I guess old men have a lot of class in that they wear admirable fragrances.

Ah, it's the famous "old man scent" critique. Show me an old man who wears Azzaro PH and Egoiste, and I'll show you someone who got laid every night as a teenager.

Acqua di Gio (Armani) and Play (Givenchy) are younger, very nice colognes. They're both day scents; however, not to many people seem to think in terms of day/night binaries as far as fragrances are concerned, so nbd. You might find a lot of other people wearing it, though.

    Indeed.
About the only thing that I'd refer to as "old man scent" is the Veg and maybe, maybe Brut and Old Spice.
But today's Old Spice is not the same as we had 30 years ago.

You would have to ask my wife that question.

I recently had my teenage niece come visit us for a few days. She knows I'm into girly things like men's cologne, so she asked me what to get for her boy friend. "My dear" I replied, "he will wear whatever YOU tell him to, so pick out something you like."

She went through my 'drobe and sniffed about 30-40 different scents over the course of the few days with us. Her absolute favorite was Green Irish Tweed. (Funny that is my wife's all time favorite too.... I guess it's in their genes!).

I pointed her to the less expensive Cool Water which she bought for him and she, of course, absolutely loves it. I haven't spoken with her BF yet to see how he likes it, but at this point, I don't think he has much choice.

I reject the entire notion of an old man scent, but even playing by those rules I don't think Egoiste qualifies. Sweet and rich-- like lots of the new releases on the market.

Alright Schad... Azarro I'll say can lean mature, but not Egoiste. I get that you don't like it, and thats fine, but that is one cool mother-f***er of a scent that has stood the test of time.

I'd put that juice up against anything current and it would win a lot of young girls hearts.

Let's rephrase it as "a scent that makes women your age think of old men, and not in a good way."
    Just call me Chris.
