I went to the TOBS shop in London in September and had a sniff of all of there offerings. For me, St James stood out as being a perfect blend of masculinity, perfume and winter comfort. I bought it together with the Mr. Taylor cream and so far haven't even cracked the latter open.
It does to my mind have a slightly looser consistency than the other TOBs cream yet still provides the trademark slick, volumous and protective lather.
All in all, in spite of it irritating my face a little, it's my favourite scent to date and well worth the 7 pounds spent.
Enjoy
I just bought it randomly like you and I really like it. the scent is great in my opinion.
It's funny, the last three TOBS creams I tried from my sample purchase were Mr. Taylor's, St. James, and Eton College, in that order. My notes on each as I tried them were identical: my favorite TOBS scent yet. All three just smell like a shaving cream ought to smell, although each is unique.

TOBS St. James Cream [150g] - 2013/3/16 - 2013/5/6 [50 total shaves; 2 travel days]
I bought this product on sale and ended up PIFing it because I wasn't keen on the scent but that's purely because it is a veeery masculine scent and I found it a touch too chemically for my liking.
I find the TOBS creams leave a lingering scent too which is great if you like the smell!

Thanks guys for the reviews here. I've been wanting to get TOBS St. James Aftershave. This helps give me an idea of the scent... sounds like exactly what I want. Now if only it wasn't out of stock at WCS, and Fendrihan. Italian Barber has it, but it's about $10 more than at WCS.

I traded for a sample of it a while back and I didn't care too much for the scent, can't really recall why. I did get great shaves out of it. I prefer the scents of Mr Taylor and Jermyn Street though.
It's a great scent, probably the most modern scent of the TOBS creams, except for Jermyn st. It is very similar to T&T's Sandalwood, with a little less sandalwood if that makes sense.
Definitely something I would wear as an edt, and probably prefer the scent more in an edt than a cream actually. Nevertheless, I doubt you'll be sorry you bought it.
St. James and Jermyn St. are my favorite TOBS creams. My nose compares the scent of St. James with GFT Eucris.

I enjoy the TOBS creams very much. I like the St. James scent and the performance of both the cream and the shave stick. In fact, I like the scent so much I purchased both the AS and Cologne. My wife likes it as well. I find it to be a very fresh and masculine scent that stays with me for many hours. I have had several compliments on the scent. I get great shaves from this cream as I do with all the TOBS creams.

I almost PIFd my tub of St. James to my buddy, since I mainly use soaps, but after using it a couple times and getting near BBS shaves, decided to keep it. Clean, masculine, modern and classy scent as other's have noted.
I think I'll always keep a tub of TOBS in my stash as it's the first luxury brand shaving cream I used when I started properly shaving a couple years ago. I also have the Rose which is great. Eventually I'll try Jermyn St. but I'm trying to keep ADs in check esp with creams because they have a shelf life.

What does St. James smell like? Compare it to something.
It is a very STRONG scent compared to Jermyn St and Mr Taylors, it is quite nice, other describe it as sickly.
It the cream i use to take the pong off my brushes.
The Kiwi Shaver.
Hard to describe the scent, but a worthy choice for sure. Hard to go wrong with the TOBS line.

I have kept a steady supply of TOBS Sandalwood, Eton College and St. James in my cabinet for several years. I love the stuff. I haven't tried the Jermyn St. yet but I am wanting to in the near future.
