It was a free vile, so I could care less if its fake, but
Does it resemble cool water? This stuff I got is near identical?

Pretty much exactly IMHO. Also smells just like Caswell Massey Greenbriar, or Bond no.9 Chez Bond. Don't get the big deal, it's just a plain old modern aquatic. I do love some Creeds, just not that one. Picked up a tiny bottle of Cool Water to see if I could get into that type of scent, jury still out...

To my nose the initial application of GIT is reminiscent of Cool Water. But on dry down GIT become something else entirely. I personally love the scent of GIT after a few minutes on the skin. For me it gets better throughout the day.

Topnotes are pretty similar, drydowns diverge a bit. Definitely a lot of similarity, though. If I cared for the fresh fougere/proto-aquatic style I'd have trouble justifying GIT over Cool Water.
Other folks on here feel very differently. Mileage, etc.
GIT is a Creed sacred cow, but according to Lucca Turin both GIT and Cool Water are by the same "nose" Pierre Bourdin, hence the similarities. Hard for me to justify the price to smell like CW, or close enough that the average person would not know the difference.
From what I hear it does smell like cool water. Or rather, Cool Water smells like GIT. But I've never smelled Cool Water so I don't have a personal testimony, just anecdotal info. I think if you wore them side by side you could easily tell the difference. Might still like CW better, who knows. I remember years ago I'd heard Halston for Men smelled just like Acqua di Gio so I bought a bottle (they're cheap, $10 or thereabouts) and indeed it DID smell just like AdG. However, when I wore them side by side the differences in quality were obvious. Just saying. I have gotten more compliments from GIT than any other fragrance I've worn and GIT is still the only fragrance that my wife has complimented so I'm not likely to swap it out for a knock-off. Just me, just saying, but who knows.
I've tried Chez Bond, too, and it does smell just like GIT but with better longevity. Just as pricey, though.

Similar? Yes. Identical? No.
Depends entirely how discerning you are or how much you care. GIT is a better constructed scent and has better longevity IMO, but justifying the cost over a very similar product can only be answered by the individual.
There's tons of scents out there that have attempted to mimic the original, but only Chez Bond has done so successfully (they're good at doing that...).
+1 on love from the wife. This is one of 3 she actually likes that I will wear. It's probably her favorite scent of all time.

I'm cringing reading some of the posts because GIT is not an aquatic at all - it's a fougere.
Think of Cool Water as a fresh fougere-variant EDT version of GIT. They're similar, but GIT is much stronger with an intense combination of violet leaf, sandalwood, and ambergris. Cool Water deals with lavender, mint, and cedar accords. If you want a poor man's GIT, Cool Water is the only way to go. And it doesn't really smell like a poor man's anything, so there's no shame in it. But GIT is the more complex and longer-lasting perfume.

I've been sampling GIT again recently. I'm not that crazy about it, although it has grown on me a little bit over time. My wife seems to like it, though. Maybe I'll give Cool Water another shot, as I just can't see myself spending anything remotely close to Creed prices on GIT. I used to wear CW regularly, but I haven't used it in years. Honestly, I don't remember it smelling at all like GIT. For me, the verbena in GIT is very strong, and I don't remember that note in Cool Water.
It took me a little while to really appreciate GIT. Yes, the similarities to CW are there, but not in the drydown; GIT evolves quite a bit and can be very temperamental depending on heat, humidity, etc. All I can tell you is to give both of them an equal chance and don't simply dismiss one or the other based on internet reviews.

I did a comparison on each wrist for the GIT and Cool water
When I first smelled it, it is what I thought of, however.....
letting my trusty girlfriend smell each wrist, she liked the cool water at first, but then the GIT won later....
at any rate, I smell the difference now when I have each to compare..
It is a good fragrance, but for the price I saw on amazon, I will not be ordering any.... lol
Maybe later in life
both are good but GIT gets more respect from me because it's the original (not because it's creed)
However it was developed, GIT was here first and was a ground breaking scent that is still going strong. The youngest, hippest guy in here could wear, and so could the oldest, crankiest "get off my lawn" guy. Its versatile. Work or play. Men like it. Women like it. Easily Creeds best seller, 26 years after it was introduced. I would assert it put Creed on the map. It was a giant leap in men's fragrance IMO. It is not an aquatic as Featherweight points out. But I do think it led perfumers down the path to creating aquatics though.
Cool Water may or may not have been developed by the same guy. It was darn smart to ripoff GiT either way. I haven't really ever worn Cool Water, but I'm sure it smells quite similar. Frag purists or guys with discerning noses can probably point out a lot of differences, but for average Joe sniffing a scent, it will smell very close. Davidoff was targeting average Joe more than Creed was. The price was much more palatable too.
The "GIT smells like Cool Water so don't buy Creed it's a waste of money" debate has likely raged since the first ever thread in the first ever men's fragrance forum.
They are both good scents.

For a more apt aquatic comparison, see Millésime Impérial and Acqua di Gio, with the former inspiring the latter.

You have stumbled into a major controversy here. Davidoff's Cool Water is a Creed GIT knock-off, supposedly created by the man who helped create GIT for Creed (Pierre Bourdin, although Creed denies this). Cool Water costs 1/10 what GIT does, and is one of the most successful men's fragrances ever. GIT smells better (I currently own both), but Cool Water is very close and soo much cheaper!
Creed is easily the most polarizing fragrance house on the forums.
They make some absolute masterpieces and others that are just absolutely horrid. They have a TON of different scents to appeal to a wide group of people. Chances are that at least one of their frags will appeal to you or the next guy. They have more mainstream exposure and make more of an effort at marketing than most of the other niche firms. Lovers get tired of the haters and haters get tired of the fanboyz... It is a war that will have extremely passionate fighters on each side and isn't likely to see an end any time soon!
The know what they are doing.
