    Default Bluebeard Disappointment

I just received my Bluebeard's Revenge shavette. I thought the idea was clever --the shavette uses regular DE blades that you break in half-- and that the product would provide a good introduction to straight razor shaving. Besides, it was only ten euros.

    I am very disappointed.

First of all, it is impossible to load. The loading system is very poorly designed. In comparison, the Dovo shavette seems much more user friendly because blades are first inserted into a plastic holder which slides right on to the rest of the razor. The drawback with that system (and the reason I did not purchase it), however, is that you have to buy proprietary blades.

Also, build quality is awful. The plastic was scratched and is cracked around the rivets.

The upside, however, is that I got a decent shave out of it without cutting myself, which encourages me to continue experimenting with shavettes and even straight razors.

Has anybody else used the Bluebeard shavette?

You can get a plastic insert for the dovo shavette that takes snapped in half DE blades. In fact, thats what mine came with. If you wanted to use the larger dovo shavette blades you had to buy the appropriate plastic holder separately.

I think that you should try contacting the company with your concerns.

+1. You can use 4 or 5 different types of blades with the Dovo Shavette.

Isn't the BlueBeard shavette a rebranded Parker?
It looks that way to me, especially from the instructions from the BlueBeard website.

Correct. The Dovo Shavette by default comes with the red holder which holds a snapped in half DE blade.

Is that true? The parker costs a bit more than 10 euros though! Also, the Parker is really easy to load, takes a couple of seconds for me.

Contact the manufacturer. Give them a chance to right this.

Actually, I think that 10 euros is a lot of money for such a simple product, especially considering that the plastic handle is cracked. I contacted the vendor and he is going to reimburse me. He took one look at my order history and realized that I was worth keeping!

Unfortunately the Dovo shavette he sells does not come with the plastic DE blade insert. According to him the Dovo blades last much longer so it's worth using those instead.

Hummm...I was under the impression that it came with the red blade holder by default (considering it is marked towards Barber's, and they want the cheapest solution possible, which would be a snapped in half DE blade).

The Dovo blades might last longer (their supposed primary benefit being that they better approximate an actual straight by being longer than a DE blade), but they would have to last much much much longer than a DE blade (each half I found was good for 2-3 shaves, so 4-6 shaves from one DE blade) as they are quite expensive:

Buy the long Dovo Shavette blades $12.63 + Shipping for a 10 pack

Assuming .20 cents per DE blade, the Dovo blade would have to supply 30 shaves per blade (since they are over $1 each, or 15 shaves per half blade) to be equal in cost to DE blades. I personally don't see that happening.

Also, if you bought the Bluebird from Shaving Shack, appears the person you are talking with is confused, as the Dovo Shavette says in it's descriptive text that it clearly comes with the Red Holder:

"Comes with red plastic holder designed to fit double edge razor blades (snapped in half) and a free double edged blade."
