Need a Bowl to Fit Acca Kappa 1869 Puck

I picked up my first puck of Acca Kappa 1869 Shave Soap this last weekend at their store in Las Vegas. Fantastic smelling soap and SWMBO actually encouraged me to buy it based on the scent. And from what I hear it works dang good too!

Bit of a problem though. Its kinda big! For reference, its 4" in diameter, 1" deep with the rounded over bottom. I didn't realize in store when its displayed in the wooden bowl, which I didn't want to buy for nearly twice the cost. Thought I'd have an empty container or something to put it in, but I don't.

So I think I'd like to get a wooden bowl or something with a lid to store it in thats nice while not being expensive like their wooden bowls are. Does anyone know of an alternative? I know I could mill it into something else, but I honestly don't want to do that.

You saw the wenge bowl for sale? I couldn't find this available online anywhere. Wonder if the Vegas store does mail order. Do you have their number?

Hey Lando!

I'm not sure if it was the "wenge" bowl or not, but it was wood. From what I understand, that bowl drives the price up $100+, and I'm pretty sure they had this bowl and soap for sale at $45 if memory serves.

I'd be interested to hear of your experiences of the 1869 soap. I have the cream in the tub which is well respected, but the soap has never been rated that highly in comparison. I prefer soaps, so your opinion after use would be very interesting.

Thread resurrection post.

I've yet to find a bowl or similar that will fit this Acca Kappa puck of soap, and I really want to use it. I'm at the point where I may just trim it down and add the pieces back to it, but I'd really prefer not to.

Hoping someone may still be able to recommend something that will work. Right now my main contender due to price and approx. size is Mama Bears wood bowls, but I have no experience with them.

Go to either Walmart or Target, and in their dish section you will find clear glass, dome-covered sugar bowls for about $4.50. These are what I use, and they work quite well. You will probably have to mill all/some of the soap to make it sit right in the bowl. Since I seriously doubt that either store sells Acca Kappa soap, you might take your puck along to test it. Walmart also has a salt bowl which is glass with a flat glass top. It is about the same size, but not concave (convex?) at the bottom. If you get one you would just have to live with seeing "salt" embossed on the side of it.

I have heated up soaps and then "forced" them down into the bowl I wanted them in lol! The trick is to not over heat them - that'll be the death of them.

I do mine in the micro but have heard of guys using boiling water and even milling them (grating) into the bowl they want, and then heating the bowl till it all renders down.

It's one way ...

Yes, go get an appropriate sized Pyrex with the tupperware type lid(my guess is the 2 cup version). Target/Publix/Walmart, etc.

Went to Michael's today (arts & crafts) because someone here somewhere said they had metal containers with covers sort of like Ikea ones. I looked at two sizes; one (with a flimsy clear plastic top) would be too small and one with a solid top might be okay. It is a little over 4 inches across (I think) and at least as deep as a puck. If one goes into the flower arrangement section, there are some round, straight-sided, covered glass bowls that are probably the right size for a puck, deep enough, and with a flat bottom. Perhaps if you put the puck in upside down (flatter side down) it would work well.

If you cannot really find a bowl for it, then I would recommend you to melt it down and pour it into your desired bowl. It is a bit messy, but once the soap sets, then you have a soap that is shaped for the bowl. Also it is much cheaper than buying a brand new bowl for it.

Last night I said to heck with it and "made it fit" in a covered glass bowl I had. It originally held some Vitos, so I transferred that to an empty plastic soap container and then used the glass bowl for the Acca Kappa. This bowl I got as a set of four for $8 I think at Walmart. Nice heavy glass. about 3.5" diameter x 1.5" - 2" deep with a red plastic snap on lid.

I used a knife and trimmed the puck down around the sides to fit the opening of the bowl. I took the pieces and pressed them down into the bottom and then pressed the trimmed puck on top. A little hot water and a test lather and it's in there pretty good. Its a little too much soap though, only about a half inch from the rim, but it'll work. Not the prettiest option but it uses what I have with no extra expense.
