I have a bottle. It is just light mineral oil with blue food coloring. It is a "brilliantine." It gives your hair shine and enhances brushability but not much hold. It's actually pretty light in your hair unless you use a lot.

Also, I'll add another suggestion for the OP. I've posted in this thread already but it doesn't look like anything is working out for you so far. A fantastic wet look combo is Protein 29 liquid hair groom + Groom & Clean. Add a healthy splash of Protein 29 to your damp hair first and then add about a little more than a quarter size dallop of Groom & Clean. Comb to style. This combo gives an intense wet look that lasts all day.

Some like to use Vitalis hair tonic + Groom & Clean but I've found the Protein 29 to give a wetter look with the Groom & Clean.

I finally came across some Protein 29 liquid hair groom. You are definitely right, I used some of this followed by my usual 2 dallops of Groom and Clean and WOW, my hair was slick looking all day, even with a lunch time recombing. Good advice.

I have thick hair (hear it every time when I get a hair cut). I use Vital Care hair gel (purple). I've tried a few products including pomades, other gels, waxes and nothing works as well as the inexpensive Vital Care.

Groom & Clean: scent is too strong
    American Crew: not bad.
Brylcream: leads to greasy forehead and pillows, hard to wash off.
Murray: leads to greasy forehead and pillows
Other gels leave my scalp dry, or have other flaws.

The Vital Care gel is ideal for people with thick hair. After I apply the gel, if I comb my hair the hold lasts about 12 hours, if I don't comb and just run my fingers through, the hold lasts 24 hours!

American Crew has a pretty decent line of Pomades. Has different types for extra hold, shine etc....

I'll have to give it a try Noah, been using Studio Line L'oreal Clean Gel for years, but I feel my scalp is starting to dislike it.

Would like to try out both Suavecitos and Grants. Have been using American Crew Fiber forever and pretty tired of it. I also have thick but thinning hair. Are there any brick and mortar stores that carry these two? Would like to buy it in person.

For a simple slick back, theres really no need to get anything more than Groom & Clean. Its super cheap, you can get it anywhere, and smells good. It washes right out and leaves your hair nice feeling. Or if youre felling like you just want something hip...and totally awesome, try Kustom Kreeps "True Fright" pomade. Its pretty light, and works awesome for slick and low pomps. It smell like root beer, and the color is orangey, like a push pop.

I started off using Suavecito in January or February. I liked it well enough, I didn't have anything to compare it to. Recently started getting my hair cut here in Chicago at Belmont Barbershop and they exclusively use and sell Layrite pomade. The difference is night and day, IMHO. It holds better, is more pliable to style, etc. And, smells better. More expensive, yes, but well worth the cost. FWIW, I do a crisp side part/slight pomp. Will do just as well for slick back styles.

    Derek,

Are you using Layrite Super Hold or the regular? I have a super crisp side part, with a tight taper down low, but longer in front so I get that Flip, slight pomp. I have been using petroeum based products to get a nice lasting shine, but wanting to give my hair a break and try something different. I see Belmonts pics on Instagram all the time, they also do some nice razor shave parts as well where they shave in the part. I tried Suavecito, but it just did not seem to have enough hold.

Okay folks, here you go, this is what will solve all your hair problems: Brylcreem Power Hold. I've been using it for 12 years. No alcohol so it doesn't dry out your hair. Keeps a strong hold all day long into the night. Leaves no greasy residue on anything.....One bottle will last several months and it's cheap!

I like this and American Crew cream when I don't want high shine. For water soluble products they work great, but they are a bit pricey.
Dax also makes a water soluble hair cream that you can get at thegreashop.com

Sweet Georgia Brown red and blue tins are my favorite for true old school pomades. They smell great, have great hold, and give you a lot of shine.

I have been brushing my hair back like that for 20+ years and my hair is thin and I want it to stay put. For several years I have used a styling "glue" and spray gel; for the last couple years its been Garnier Fructis Survivor glue and Garnier Fructis spray gel both of which I would say are pretty inexpensive.

I use the "glue" while my hair is wet and brush it through - this is what really keeps it in place - then I use a little spray gel and brush it through, also when wet, which gives it shine and it also helps keep your hair in place. It all washes out very easily too.

From the book Cary Grant: A Celebration of Style:

"Archie (Cary Grant) copied Zeppo's (Zeppo Marx) slicked back hairstyle, obtained by the application of brilliantine. But Archie improved it, at least for his purposes, by mixing it with Dixie Peach, the pomade used by black performers of the era, creating what we would call today the perfect 'product'. The hybrid goo gave his hair a sophisticated blue-black sheen that would fit right in among the mousses and gels at Frederic Fekkai and other of today's top salons."

Dixie peach is discontinued. Although, I do have a tub laying around for special "peachy" occasions. There are tons of pomades out there. For you all natural folks, try Dr. Ruben's, he offers 3 holds. For you water based guys, there are waaay to many chemicals in those water soluble "pomades" for me. You can have them, I'll stick to petrol.

    You are in Asia?

Japanese Gatsby has a range of hair product, including 'ultra hard' for staying power. Tho I am not sure if any one of them can make you look like DiCaprio
