First, you got yours at a discount cause I liked you. If it will make you feel better, I can charge you more next time. :-)

As far as the ebay razor, well... here is where I am at on that front. At least the guy is bright enough to know that he can get more for one of my razors than he paid for it. It may not sell at that price and the market will eventually dictate the final price. I do have to say it's an extremely clean razor. Fundamental and elegant with the right splash of pizzazz. The one-piece olive wood circumvented the warping that can occur with that wood. That being said, any of you who have one of my razors would have your stock go up if it does sell for more than he paid. Selling it for more is a whole heck of a lot better than the guy who sold one of my razors for less money than he paid. That was just plain silly. The guy who bought it sent it to me for adjustment. I had to regrind the honing mistakes, make it sharp again, and once that was done, the razor doubled in value. I'm pretty sure the new owner won't part with it for a while. The only down side for this ebay fellow is that I will never sell him another one of my razors.

I'm curious, if he sold it for the same price he paid for it, would your opinion be different?

Selling price is immaterial. Getting rid of it tells me he would sell the next one too, more likely than not to make a profit. Everyone is certainly entitled to make a profit off one of my razors... ONCE! I'd rather have my razors go to folks who want to hang on to them for their kids and grand kids.

Selling it like this shows that the seller values the name Bill Ellis in terms of the price any creation of Mr. Ellis commands. It doesn't necessarily show that the seller ever truly appreciated the craftsmanship. I'd rather have a man value my work than the monetary value of my work.

If he's selling to feed his family, he sure is buying and selling a lot of things off eBay lately. Just look at his feedback.

I can't fault another man for deciding to sell something, but if I had a razor like that it would be with me for the long haul.

I do not know his situation or approve him selling a one of kind razor but we do not know his situation...his feedback shows 91 his last sale was in march and last purchase almost a year ago....

You're right, I didn't look at the dates very closely.

I can think of so many things in my life I'd sell before that razor if I was lucky enough to own it. Given the rarity that these things show up, I'm sure someone will buy it. To be honest, I look at it often. Still kicking myself for not buying the last one that was posted on BST.

To emphasize... I carry no ill feelings whatsoever towards anyone who sells one of my custom razors, regardless of their reason or when it's sold. Hopefully, the eBay fellow isn't going through a hard time with family financial issues.

I look at this a bit differently, Bill doesn't make Razors, Dovo and other companies make razors. Bill makes art, one of a kind pieces or maybe a small series, his Art happens to be a beautiful razors that you can use. If someone is willing to pay more than what Bill is charging, it just shows that his work is appreciated and holds a higher value.

Oh and by the way Bill, I think your work is great!

Anyone who is lucky enough to obtain one of Bill's razors is in for a treat no matter what the price is. They are fantastic functional works of art that will always increase in value, especially when Bill retires. The quality and craftsmanship involved in one of his razors are amazing and are truly family heirloom worthy. Gents... Bill's razors DO NOT pop up often at all for sale. His waiting list is over 5 years long and has been closed for a while now. I would suggest if you see one for sale and can afford the price? Buy it.. there will ALWAYS be someone out there willing to buy it off of you. Just my .02 cents..

i would surmise that if the waiting list is over 5 yrs long AND closed, a premium on a nice razor could very well be warranted by a buyer.

That's what I'm doing with mine. I'm quite fortunate to have it, and it might be the only thing of value I have to pass along to my son and grandson.

. . . He went around back and into the basement because he was hungry. He ate cold beans out of a can and drank some water, and then he saw the small mirror Parker had bought with the razor and the can of lather. He looked at himself and knew he had to take a chance on staying long enough to shave. He shaved, and that made him feel better. . .
