Noodler's Flex Pen

My Noodler's Bumblebee Yellow Flex Pen arrived from Goulet Pens. As always 5 *****,
customer service, a great company to do business with.
First impressions are postive. The nib has enough flex for my writing style. Ink flow is great. Love the color and the shading of black into the yellow.

Awesome - glad you're happy with it!

Flex pens definitely take a lot of practice to get the hang of. It still takes me a long time to write with one, I'm constantly consciously thinking about when to apply pressure and when to lift off. But man, some people can really do amazing things with one! Guess I just need more practice too before it becomes natural.

Hmmmmm. Well I have mine, now, too. I don't know quite what to do with it, though, I am new to FPs. The nib is not centered on the feed, I am going to have to watch Brian's video again.

Brain's video is a great deal of help on to center the nib. The nib does move, I pulled mine out a fraction because of the way I right.

Nice post on the Flex. I find that it wants more pressure on the nib than I usually use with fountain pens (almost no pressure, just letting it glide over paper). It appears the Flex wants to be pressed down to spread nib slightly.

I'm probably being too careful with it. I need to get some vinyl gloves though! Messy!

Compared to other flex pens I have that are vintage it requires slightly more pressure. My vintage fountain pens that have a flex nib are all 14kt or 18kt gold and flex at the slightest touch.
Flex nibs fell out of everyday use around the 40's. I think the flex pen from Noodler's fits in with Nathan's philosophy about inks and the flex pen is an extension of that.

I've seen several references to Nathan's philosophy, but I haven't seen that outlined anywhere that I've run across. Can someone fill me in, or point me to a manifesto?

Wow! I got an economics degree 30 years ago and I was always more interested in the human behavior aspects of the study as opposed to the quantitative analysis (although I enjoy mathematics immensely). I went to a small school steeped in the "Austrian School" of economics, which was (and still is) unusual. To hear him quote Bastiat, Von Mises, Hayek ... what did this guy do before he got in the ink business? He is deeply into what some would say is arcane economic philosophy!

Very interesting guy! I don't know what I think about his flex pen (I'm not a pen aficionado) but I do like his inks. And I love his philosophy!

The other think to remember is that the way to flex a pen is not to bear down on the nib - the tines are flexed by putting the pressure on the barrel when you pull the pen across the paper.

Playing with a flex pen is a great deal of fun. It is learning when to apply more pressure when to lift off. It is simlair to shaving pressure. I think the critics of the Noodler's Flex Pen do not take the time to learn it's personality. Granted they do not flex as much as older flex pens, I have used the older ones. I like how the Noodler's flexes better.

Anybody have any video links on how to write pretty with this thing? I don't know when to press and when to let up. It's kinda fun, though.

I'm not a 'flex pen guy' either, but I like his ink and his attitude.

If the ink were crap I woudn't buy it, but since it's good stuff, I don't mind going out of my way to support this unique endeavour. :001_smile
