    Default Top shaving myths

Looking to find out what everyone thinks are the top shaving myths. Here are a few...

    - You will get a better shave using the latest technology (M3, Fusion)
    - Flipping a blade in a DE will make it last longer

There have been threads that talk about one specific myth, but I think putting them all together in a thread would make it easier to gather together for the wiki.

Shaving makes your hair grow faster.

It really just results in a hair with a flat, sharp end instead of a softer, tapered end. Plus hair's dead anyway, so cutting it off won't make any difference in how much hair your follicle produces.

Shaving causes hair to become heavier and coarser.

You beat me to it Howard...

You should never shave against the grain (ATG). However, do use at own risk is not for everyone.

I was taught to always shave With the Grain (WTG) and I am sure many others were also.
Until I discovered the 2nd pass XTG & 3rd pass ATG, however some go as high as 7 passes in multiple directions.
Then there is North-South (N-S), South-North (S-N), East-West (E-W), West-East (W-E), Across the Grain (XTG), and yes even Against the Grain (ATG).

Boar bristle brushes are pretty good.

If you suffer razor burn on your neck, just finish up with an electric. -- Magnulus

Never put alcohol on your face.
There are guys who defend that one to the death. I even believed it for a few years; I am now thankfully back on the Aqua Velva train!

My own father who started me out on an electric rotary shaver as a youngster had the very same advice when I asked for some instruction on how to shave with a blade when the electric just wasn't cutting it.

Gee, Dad, this just isn't working.

Wel, that's not totally a myth

I think it depends on one's skin type ; with dryish skin like mine, I try to use my Aqua Velva Green once a week max

Could be. Everyone's face is different. But, like my Dad says, "Never is a long, long, time." AV doesn't seem to dry my face at all; just feels great! OTH, I can't seem to find any other alcohol splashes that work for me.

If you have poor skin (e.g. Acne, Rosecea, etc.) you can't use a Str8 or DE.

Wet shaving's cheaper than using the newer cartridge razors and canned gels.

Although I still tell myself - and others - that this is a fact. If you only use one soap and only have one razor, sure. But when you're buying new soaps and creams and after shaves and brushes all the time, it's not.

Saw a 4-pack of Fusion cartridges for $12.99 or $13.99 yesterday. You can get 100 blades for a DE at that price.

Maybe this is only a myth for most people.
