    Unhappy Disaster!

    The Equipment:
    • 1960 Gillette F2 Fatboy
    • Edge Unscented Shaving Gel
    • Many cold water rinses and Alum Block
    • Stetson Original AS, ASB, Deodorant, & Cologne

    The Shave:
Today, I was in a real hurry, so I decided to forego whipping up some Bigelow lather and just used some Edge Shaving Gel and a DE. WOW! What a mistake! The Edge lather looked good but had no moisture and no glide. My Fatboy felt like I was dragging the edge of a broken beer bottle across my face. This was absolutely the worst shave in my life. I didn't realize how much difference a good shaving cream could make. I will never make that mistake again. My face feels and looks like raw hamburger. Not even the cold water, the alum block, or the shaving balm cooled off my face. I achieved a 90% shaving burn!

Up to now, my Fatboy has never failed to give me less than a superlative shave. But the fault was not with the razor. I can't believe I used the canned goo for so long. It is terrible!

Thanks. Good to know. My Edge is going in the trash.

As canned goo goes, Barbasol is tops!! I think it is rather super boring to use, but I can get a high quality shave from a can of Barbasol. As a side benefit, it's also one of the cheapest canned goos out there.

Been there and done that. But only once, that was enough! I will never use canned goo again.

Did you use the same prep? I was surprised how much better good prep made Edge. It's never going to be my go-to stuff again, but it can work pretty well.

It's a hell of a lot better than Barbasol.

Yup, grab a $1 can of Barbasol at the pharmacy or big box retailer in the travel section. Stuff smells great IMO and it will suffice when in a hurry. When I travel I pack a razor I'm not afraid to lose and buy a pack of the best blades I can find when I arrive along with a travel can of Barbasol.

I hate to hear of the disaster. I've been in your shoes before just going through my blade sampler. Some of those blades were worse than me grabbing a piece of shatter glass and pretending like I'm shaving via Fred Flinstone style.

I dunno, I was in a hurry before work yesterday and pulled out the Barbasol. It had zero glide as well. I was really careful to take off even more pressure and only did a two pass shave and ended up with a good enough shave. But I wouldn't count on much more success with the Barbasol over the Edge. What I'm going to get to try for those crazy days when I'm running late is some brushless shaving cream. I asked a question a few days ago about it in the forum and the feedback I got was that it's at least better than the canned goo.

You can use your Bigelow Brushless if you don't have time to build lather.

If I'm ever in that big of a hurry I have a cordless electric Braun in the car. And the charge lasts MONTHS!

KMF is a brush less cream. Cheap, (or at lest not expensive) and works really well. Maybe you could give it a try? (I have used it brush less one time. It worked well. Nothing amazing. But the shave was respectable.)

it is possible that canned goo simply requires a more careful technique which takes into account the far lower amount of protection afforded by the goo than would be given by a good shaving soap lather

    as far as product suggestions:
nancy boy is a cream which can be used brushless
the fact that it's named "nancy boy" makes it even better
proraso also makes a canned foam (i haven't tried it, though, so i can't vouch for its performance)

I've found Aveno canned goo to be pretty good but truly for the price you can't beat Barbasol. Back in the before time I never liked the shaves I got from Edge or any of the gels. Barbasol always gave me the best shaves. Then I discovered proper soaps, creams and shaving brushes.

Barbasol has a bit more glide if you massage some in first...

    Thumbs up

Again, thanks for all the good suggestions.

It never occurred to me that I could use any of the creams as brushless cream. Duh?
