What does it mean when a brush is two-banded and does it affect the use of it?

Two-band is a varietal of badger hair. The term refers to the visible bands of color on the knot (dark at the bottom, white at the tips). The hair itself is much more coarse than three-band bristle at the base, then tapers to a soft tip.
The reason folks (including me) like two-band is that the coarseness of the bristle allows for a knot with excellent backbone. To get equivalent backbone in a three-band hair, you have to fill the knot so densely that it can lead to flow issues. Functionally, a well calibrated two-band knot is a thing of beauty.
