Default Why are Fat Boys more expensive and desirable than Slim Adjustables?

My take on this is that the Fat Boy and it's packaging are considered to be the epitome of mid-century design.

    I agree.

They just look solid and well built compared to the slim.

    ...and that, too.

The FatBoy looks waaaaaaay more sturdy than 99.9% of DE razors ever made, which I think is part of the appeal. Its like shaving with a MACHINE!

Maybe it could be the hype recently the Fatboy has had that has increased the interest, thus blowing the price out of the ball park??

I only found out that a fatboy was the name of the razor since joining here a couple of months ago I'd been using a Fatboy for many many years too, never knew it had a name.

Made earlier, so older and fewer remain in existence.
Made for 4 years versus 7, so fewer were made in the first place.
Solid hefty 50's styling versus more refined, sleek 60's styling is more preferable for most guys.
We are men - we want the biggest razor, the heaviest razor, the most aggressive razor, arrrr arrrr arrrrr!

No idea really, but I don't think that a FB is more desirable. For me, the slim is a far better razor.

KM, how does a Fatboy on a high setting compare to the new R41. I've never used an adjustable. I like the appearance of the Fatboy. Did they also make them gold plated?

I have not used the R41 but Slims and Fatboys both perform very well for me cranked to 8 or 9.

As to the OP's question, the FB is just better looking and feeling, to my eyes.

I get similar shaves out of them but prefer FBs to Slims.

As they said in Econ class - supply and demand. Supply is smaller for Fatboys while demand is greater. For me, the Fatboy shaves better than a Slim - the extra weight of the FB helps with a closer shave.

Yes, they did make a gold-plated version...it is called the Gillette Executive Adjustable and was made ~'58.

I think the name "Fat Boy" just makes it sound better. Slim sounds like your aunt's cigarettes. Fat Boy just sounds manlier. Anybody know when the first appearence of the fat boy/slim monikers happened?

Of course the fact that there are less of them out there because it's older and wasn't made as long is very true.. I just wonder if the fat boys would be more than double what slims go for on the bay if the names weren't so polar.

That being said, I have 2 slims and a junk fat boy. I have a junk fat boy because I was too star struck when I saw it in the antique store that I didn't even think to twist the dial on it..

Still looking for a usable one in the wild.

I used the Fb on 9 for many years, and it shaved like a champ, but the R41 is a whole new breed of razor, it is faster cleaner smoother and gives a smoother shave in a fraction of the time, that's no belittling the Gillette whatsoever, I will keep mine purely because of owning them all from new, and using them for the years i used them for, kinda sentimental, like old friends.
