    Default Nice Items

    Hi,

I tried to post this under the Vendors section but unfortunately I'm not that esteemed yet.

I would really like to share what I found and thought all you connoisseurs might appreciate the unique items offered on this website http://www.englishshavingshop.com (be sure to check out the big five shaving brushes and the last monster!)

I don't see anything but horribly overpriced stuff on that site, the shaving brushes looks horrible IMO...

    Really?

Then I must be horribly uneducated when it comes to these types of things.

Sorry about that! I now get why I can't post under the vendors section! I suppose it's part of the learning process.

    Welcome to B&B, Ray.

Don't bash yourself on this post. I found that South African site interesting, and those brushes are unlike any others I've seen. In fact, the whole site is interesting because I didn't spot a brand I recognized when I poked around for a minute or two. Could the lack of familiar brands be the legacy of restricted international trade during the apartheid era? I don't know; just asking.

But the other posters are right, the stuff does seem overpriced, especially when you can't be sure of the quality of the unknown brands.

One other thing: You can't post in the vendor section -- and never will -- because you're not a vendor. You might have been able to post this thread in the "Deals" section of the marketplace, where guys can give a "heads up" about offers good and bad.

    Thanks for that Styptic ;-)

Apartheid Era? Really not sure....... All I know is I've always had this fascination about shaving and unfortunately we don't have much to offer here in South Africa. When I found that sight, I thought that's what the stuff costed so I didn't think much of it and would have probably bought the stuff if you guys didn't warn me. Like I said it's part of the learning process and eventually I'll get there.

I love the whole nataure of this site, it's like that Era when I was growing up that was lost and now I've found it again. I feel great every time I log on!! Just an example --> I was reading earlier about "Saint Sue" and It really touched me. It's just an amazing site with amazing people, very difficult to find gems like these in todays world!

won't have to book mark this one,
$50+ for a can of shave cream when I can get MWF for less than $15, Momma Bear and MANY MANY others starting at $10, Indian shave cream from $3

I have to agree with the over-priced and in some cases ugly comments. I mean some of that stuff costs as much as a Plisson bruch and Plisson is a name that I think a lot of people associate with a long tradition of quality. Even Simpson brushes can be had for as much or less than that and they don't have a bunch of writing on them again, my personal opinion about what looks good and what doesn't.

I have to imagine that you can order stuff online from elsewhere. If you can have stuff shipped from other places, I highly recommend it. You may pay a bit more in shipping, but I can't imagine that it would cost near as much as that site charges for things.

They also make wild claims about their shaving soaps, "will last for a year or longer?" I think how long they last is a strong YMMV (your mileage may vary) case. I got through TOBS creams quite fast because I tend to load heavier than others. It worries me when people make claims like that though because it shows me they are willing to lie (whether they know they are lying or not) to sell their products.

Anyways, have a look around in our vendor section here, see if you can get some stuff shipped to you at better prices before you jump to ordering from that site :) .

Some of those brushes look like rebranded Vulfix, Simpson, and Kents. Did anyone see the last special brush, the water badger brush? I think it was something like close to $1700!?

I would like to visit the shop if I am ever in South Africa, it looks like they have quite a history.

GEEZUS! 1700 dollars for a brush!?! I wonder about this water badger. Is it a real animal? Is it that rare? Honestly I know not much about badgers, but I know companies like Plisson sell specialized badger hair for a lot of extra money.

So after a quick Google search it seems the only water badgers live in a place called Dartmoor. The temperatures are no where near the -18 to -30 degrees as the page suggests. There are also quite a few pages about protecting these animals, that may mean that these brushes are expensive because they are illegal in some areas? Either way sounds kind of shady again. Sorry to bring this back to the negative btw, this is just kind of what I see or think about the site.

And I totally forgot to say in my first response welcome to B&B Ra222r :) . Glad you found us, and like I said in my other post, I hope this leads you to some more vendors so you can save a bit of money (unlike the rest of us with our various acquisition disorders lol).
