    Default Recommend a digital camera?

An affordable one, please. $500 and below.

Though I like to tinker with 35mm - I have a Nikon N80, - I think I want something convenient that I can put in a pocket or at least carry easily.

    Thanks so much.

Fuji F31fd. The best image quality (250$)

Canon G9. New compact powerhouse (500-600$)

In decreasing order of recommendation as well as size.
Canon PowerShot S5 with Image Stabilization - $450 (SLR replacement, long lens 36-432mm)
Canon PowerShot A640 - $300 (Do it all P&S, cheaper than alternative Powershot G7)
Canon SD800 with Image Stabilization - $300 (Compact P&S, fits in pocket)

Can you give us a little bit more information on what you're looking for? What features do you want? What type of photos do you take? Do you want complex or simple? What is the final output (print size or online)? Do you care about media type or battery type? Do you have a preference for a certain brand?

I'm not sure of the proper term for it, but to me the most important feature in a digital camera is shutter lag. What I mean is the time between when you hit the button and the picture is taken.

I get great response time from my canon SD550. My MIL gets horrible lag on her Kodak. Both have the same megapixels. Her pictures always come out bad because the moment has passed.

Big fan of the Canon Digital Elph series. I have had a Power Shot S500 Digital Elph for 3 years now. Not so great on moving objects. I think the new one is a 7 megapixel and they MAY have addressed the shutter speed issues. Not sure but thought I read an add implying that. They have two versions with differing display sizes and overall size. But the differences aren't much. Oh and slight price difference.

If you get one look at the LowePro cases. I have an MX 8S model that is soft and has a pocket inside for an extra battery. It's perfect. Took a while to research it.

While DPreview.com is great reviews in extensive detail, I would first recommend going to ImagingResource.com and check out Dave's Picks to narrow down your choices. Then go back to DPreview.com for a true and comprehensive review.

Fujis (F31) are excellent, in reliability, image quality, and lack of shutter lag.

Apologies for the belated response; and thank you all for the suggestions.

A little more about what I'm looking for:

I live in New York City. I'm looking for a camera that will help me capture life there. Not just the buildings and the landmarks, but the people and the culture.

I am also looking just to take fun pictures of my friends and other random stuff.

So, I suppose I'm looking for something versatile.

I'm not taking this extremely seriously, but more of for fun. Still, I'd like something that is of good quality, is inexpensive and is fairly compact. Something that can shoot in black and white, too. I have my Nikon N80, which I'm still learning to use, for more complex photography.

I'm going to check out the Websites now.

    Thanks again.

I would at the Sony Cybershots. They fall within your price range and produce excellent results.

I was having the same issue with my Canon A530. I bought a highspeed memory card (I think that's what it's called) and it significantly cut down on the lag.

As for camera's, I don't think you can you wrong with a Canon. I think they offer the right combination of ease of use and manual features. I just recently bought my wife a Nikon D12 and it's nice because it's small but you it doesn't have enough manual features. The macro function on it is not too good.
