Default Merkur Vision + ? Blade = Success!

    Hey all,

I have a Merkur Vision that I've been using since July, and I really like it. The only blades I have tried in it are the Merkur Platinums that came with it. They seem to skip and drag a lot, particularly on my jawline. Anybody want to recommend something new? I plan to order a couple (a few?) different brands to try.

I would definitely recommend the blade sampler pack for starters. However, you might want to look @ Derby blades. For an ultimate exercise in shaving, try the Feather blades with your VISION.

Do a forum search "sampler" & you'll pull up a ton of helpful posts including links to vendors selling sampler packs.

Leisure Guy has a great post "Disquisition on Blade Samplers" or something like that that is very informative on this topic.

Bottom line: try both the sample pack from LetterK & the "world tour" pack from razorandbrush. You will experience some mighty fine edges between the
two & the cost is relatively low to take the Grand Tour of Blades.

BTW - Merkur's are about the worst blade I've ever used. Hate'm but love their razors ! Go figger...

I just recently re-acquired a Vision, so I haven't been using one for quite some time, but when I was, I found the feather to be the top performer in it. One thing you may or may not know about the vision, is because of it's weight the whole "hold near the end and let the weight of the razor pull it down" thing goes out the window... I actually apply some negative pressure to it...

FWIW, my experience with the Merkur blades (and I've tried blades from several different packs, and multiple blades from each pack) is that they always give me that experience (dragging, rough, skipping, yanking, pulling, etc...) Some love 'em, so they must work for some, but man I can't stand 'em....

For sure, a sampler pack. When all was said and done with mine, the Feather was still the best. I have my Futur on a #3 setting. I have consistantly excellent shaves with it. As always -- YMMV.

AFAIK razor skipping happens out of (poor) lather, not because of the blade itself.

I have always used Merkur blades in my Vision. I am now trying Feather but I don't see much difference. Everyone has different preferences so give them a try.

I'm a vision user and I have tried the sampler pack. That being my send my go to blade for consistent shaves is Derby. Sure, I can get a closer shave with the gillette or feather, but shave 6 days in a row like a can with the Derby.

I have been getting great shaves all week with an Israeli blade in my Vision.

If you can get your hands on some Tesco blades, they are pretty good in a vision, and Gillette Silver Blue I have found quite good too. I hated Merkur blades, they gave me nicks all the time, even in my Gillette Tech.
