For bourbon my standard drinking whiskey is Makers Mark. For scotch it's Teacher's. I'm not really a fan of any of the Tennessee whiskeys - the charcoal-filtering leaves a wierd taste in the whisky.

Basil Hayden straight is very good. Also, Makers Mark on the rocks or WL Weller as a good all around, low price, choice.

I'd go for an irish whiskey such as Jamesons or better still Redbrest if you can find it.

My favorite on the rocks is Woodford Reserve. Pretty inexpensive at around $25 a bottle.

I also drink Jack on the rocks. Kind of my old standby drink.

Well, for me it'd be Johnnie Walker red or black. On the rocks, I'd almost prefer the red ... ya don't wear a tuxedo to go golfing! YMMV and all that. I've never gotten into bourbons, so my range is somewhat limited. Of course, these could serve double duty at the end of the evening for making a rusty nail ...

Knob Creek or Evan Williams Single Barrel select on ice. I just had some Blanton's for the first time this weekend and was really good, but pricey.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on George Dickel No. 12. Most of what was suggested I already owned or had at least tried. Thanks again.

If you like Jack, you'll love Dickel. It's so much smoother.

Honestly I don't like Jack, but Dickel isn't too bad. What I've really been searching for is a bottle George Dickel Barrel Select, Dickel's Ultra-Premium offering.

I just this minute finished off my bottle of Elijah Craig. I highly recommend it though my next bottle is going to be something different for the sake of variety.

Dickel is good... I like Gentleman Jack as well.

I'm told that 40 Creek is good as well...

    Makers Mark
    Woodford Reserve
Crown Royal - all my in-laws drink a lot of this stuff
these were the first to pop into my mind

My dad loves whiskey/bourbon and Scotch and his "everday/best value" bourbon is Ancient Age. Not expensive at all but he really loves it.

Makers Mark is a good everyday bourbon. It is lighter (no rye). Woodford Reserve is also a nice mellow bourbon. And when you are looking for a high octane wallop, A.H. Hirsch.

+1 on these. In fact last week when wanted something just plain ol' good I picked up a bottle of Makers Mark - it's already half gone :)

You know, now that I think of it Tim - you may also want to get a bottle of some of the low-end Black Maple Hill Bourbon's, as they are around $35 and make for a wonderful daily drink. I am REALLY fond of their higher end offerings, however they can be incredibly expensive.

Canadian Whiskies are excellent. Ever try Wisers, Crown Royal, or Schenley? All glorious elixers.
