Thread: Another Newbie

  1. Default Another Newbie

Hi All - Just found this forum tonight while researching safety razors with the hopes of finding a good one. I looked at Parkers and Merkur but still have a lot to learn. Any advise would be much appreciated.

    Welcome to B&B!

Consider one of the Edwin Jagger razors too, perhaps the DE89L.

I'm still new but the Gillette Super Speed has been my best bet. You can find them on the cheap at antique stores sometimes. Even the old crusty ones can clean up into an everyday razor. No kidding - they were made to last. Add a quality blade and you are in business.

+1 ... if you like vintage, this is the way to go!

Have fun with this new adventure! The shave brush and a blade sampler are the next items to consider!

edwin jagger DE89 is a "new classic". great way to startm very smart first play. the same company makes a brilliant cream as well: "sea buckthorn". the brush is going to cost you some money and just about anything by simpson is a very safe bet.

    welcome and enjoy!

Thanks for the suggestions - I have much to ponder now. I moved to the brush and soap about a year ago - found it to be a much closer shave even with a disposable. Got the brush and soap from (I know it's not high quality) Walmart. I will be looking to upgrade the brush soon.

Here is another question with a preface. I heard once that storing a razor in a quality razor oil helped it last a bit longer. Is there any truth to this?

Welcome! Without question, you should get a Merkur 34C HD. It is a great razor to learn with, and to use and enjoy as you advance your technique.

Welcome to B&B. A vintage 50's Gillette Superspeed, or Tech would also be a good choice. Order a blade sampler pack is essentail.
