I've been absent from this forum during a couple of weeks, been busy with the initiation fo the new students (don't worry, we only do nice things with them) so haven't had much time to shave in. Traditionally we are also supposed to not shave from the point we have attended a course preparing for the initiation (circa six months ago). I've only partly followed this, saving up a moustasche from my meagre supply of facial hair, but the last two weeks I thought I might as well not shave at all. Not a pretty sight...

But for this first shave for a while I got myself a real treat. A C.V. Heljestrand mk12, which came with a wonderful edge from the seller. My first 7/8 blade and I love it. Though the blade isn't perfectly clean (got some minor pitting) my only real complaint is the somewhat untightly riveted scales that flop around a bit. Otherwise, it's magic. It absolutely obliterated my moustache anyway.

The scales also seem to have chinese or japanese writing scratched into it. It's cool how this blade might have traveled so far, from Sweden to east-asia, and then back to the homeland. One can't help to wonder what it has seen.

Congratulations to a very nice razor. The scales are easy to fix.

Thanks! Well I have to step up my game in learning how to restore razors, rescaling included. At the very least I've started to restore an erik anton berg, hand-sanding is hard work.

That's a lovely Ralf Aust by the way, I usually don't look much at the scales of razors, but those are absolutely marvellous!

Eskilstuna is a small town and it never has been a large town by any means, but at any given time (during the golden era) there were at least a dozen straight razor manufacturers active there, all of them cooperated and shared blanks, knowledge and materials. The craftsmen knew each other and often went from one employer to another. All manufacturers made their razors out of Bergslagen steel made from the purest iron ore in the world and no longer available. Only a small portion of the razors where larger than 5/8, but once properly honed the edge will be the sharpest and longest lasting there is. Several of you can verify the last statement.

What I am trying to say is; see beyond Heljestrand and explore other fine Swedish manufacturers like Törnblom, E.A. Berg, Söderén, Dahlström, Jernbolaget, SSA any many others. Try their nimble and viciously sharp 5/8 razors. You´ll most likely get shaves you´ll soon become addicted to, I am.

Today´s shave was the flagship model of Klas Törnblom (but also produced by other manufacturers). This version is rather uncommon since it is 11/16 and eqiupped with a thumb notch. This very thin bladed but hard razor type is gradually taking the pole position in my shaving universe.

Thank you for reading. I wish you all a very nice day.:001_smile
