Default For those of you who use more than one Safety Razor.

    Hey folks,

I stole this idea from my fellow Steward David over in brushes..........

How do you decide upon which Razor to use on any given day? Do you need to consult trigonometry tables, toss multiple coins, close your eyes and reach with your left hand or any other methods?

I usually go to my supply shelf and randomly pick a razor depending on my mood. I will then use it for three days until the blade is dull. I will then pick another, I have no rime or reason to my madness.

How do you guys or gals pick?

I choose on a whim mostly. Sometimes a conscious choice based on whether a particular razor has been "neglected" or sometimes even for a specific task such as mowing down the weekend growth on a Monday morning with a slim set to 9 for the first pass or reach for the #24 Tech if I want smooth and gentle for a <24 hour regrowth shave.

I usually just look over my collection and see what jumps out at me. Sometimes there will be a conversation here about a particular razor and that will give me the bug to use mine.

Admittedly, it's getting to be less of a decision since the new Mühle R41 came around. That takes up most of my shaves now.

    Mostly I consult the Stars.

Sometimes I think about whether Feather AS might be safer than the Futur or Progress today.

I decide the night before and setup my gear before going to sleep. Sometimes I use the same razor and cream or soap all week, sometimes I change it up every day.

I like to get my razor and brush in position in the evening so I don't have any drowsy accidents in the morning.

My work schedule is 6 days on, 3 days off. SE blades last 6 days and DE last 3 so I use SE's during my work week and more often than not switch to DE's on weekend when I have more time to concentrate. Streamline is my go to but if it fresh blade, I usually use the 1912 the first day. The only DE I use anymore is a Darwin Deluxe so that makes weekends a breeze plus the shave is fantastic for a DE. I am trying to pare down my collection so this isn't as much of a problem for me.

A Darwin.....that is horrible, please stop using it and send it to me for safety reasons.

I'm an engineer by training and have a complex rotation algorithm that involves inter alia historical use patterns, various weighting factors and and various types of random number generators. I do that for every other week and alternate with weeks where I just pick what I feel like. I do factor the free choices into the rotational algorithm for the calculation weeks. I have different, but mathematically weighted and correlated rotational algorithms for my soaps/creams, another for brushes, another for aftershaves and yet another for colognes and edTs. Most evenings, I set up the input strings and boundary conditions prior to sleeping, and let the algorithms converge overnight. Normally, in the morning I check to see what I must use/wear for the day.

Ha, had you going. I just pick whatever strikes my fancy, sometimes based on good suggestions from the SOTD, BOTD and FOTD threads here.

I choose on a whim. Right now I am using my Schick L-1 simply because it give smooth, near perfect, effortless shaves. I also learned to shave with a Schick L-1.
It is just soap, hot water and a sharp blade. It isn't rocket science or a Zen ritual.

Sometimes I choose the night before. Some of my choice is based on posts I read here. I have 5 on the counter at all times and keep telling myself to stick to one for at least 3 shaves before rotating it and chucking the blade - never happens.

I change razors when the blade gets dull, usually. As for order, it mainly goes in more or less, a progressive order from right to left, with a few 'oh-what-the-heck' shaves by something else thrown in. By the end of the rotation, all gets used probably once at most twice in the rotation and it starts again

of course, new additions get 'next in line' privileges, once the current blade gets dull, that is :)
