Default Disposable Razors- which do you recommend and...why

My shaving style has evolved to using my Muhle double edged razor with either Feather or Precision razor blades, then touching up with Gillette Sensor 3's, especially around difficult to access areas on my face....under my nose, chin areas, etc.

I use creams, gel, shaving soaps on my face..all that works well.

But back to the question at hand...best disposable razors at a reasonable price.

I don't want to spend too much money on disposable razors...but although the Sensor 3's work ok....are there better, longer lasting disposable razors for a similar price ?

    Any suggestions ?

Search for Bic Metals on eBay, supposed to be a great single-blade disposable.

Wal-Mart sells Wilkinson Sword blades for the Gillette Trac II/ Atra. They are $3.54 for a 10 pack. So $.35 cents each, and I can guarantee you the results will be much better than any disposable!

The Atra pivots, and the Trac II doesn't. All you need is a handle, and some Wal-Marts even have that, as they sell the BumpFighter handle (which will hold Trac II carts) in the African American section.

If you want the pivoting Atra instead, handles are quite plentiful on Ebay.

If you want to go cheaper yet, Dollar General sells Trac II/Atra carts that are six for $1.25 that's a mere $.21 cents each!

** Note that the Trac II, and Atra are separate systems, but the cartridges being discussed are specially designed to work with both. You can also buy genuine Gillette cartridges for about a $1.50 a piece. **

Another vote for getting Trac II or Atra compatible carts, they will provide a DFS and the cost is very affordable.

I recently used a Gillette "Custom Plus 3" disp. on a business trip. Today was shave #7, and it was still a very good, close shave. I use two passes. The best of the current disposables IMO seems to be the Mach 3 also by Gillette. They appear to use higher quality blades, but also cost more. If you can find any, the Bic Metals are also very good, but nearly impossible to find over the counter any more. I use tube cream or gel when out of town.

I shaved this morning with one of these:

    http://www.amazon.com/Shick-Disposab...f=pd_sim_hpc_1

A bag of 10 with two extra ST2's goes for $1.97 at the nearest Wal-Mart. With a $1.00 coupon, cost is <$0.10 per razor.

With a proper lather, I got a tolerable 2-pass shave, enough to get me through the day. Close enough, but with minimal to no irritation.

I keep a fresh sample of the Schick twin blade in my travel kit at all times, plus a travel size can of Foamy (only in dire emergency) For air travel, an Arko stick or a 75g tube of Nivea cream is under consideration, along with a TGN synthetic brush knot in my father's Surrey handle.

Bic Sensitive. Cheap and they work well for me. YMMV.

Dollar general sometimes has single blade personna disposables in stock - 1 buck for 10 or 12 razors.
the one near me always has 10 personna twin blades for a buck.

I found a packet of Bic Metals at a local discount store over the weekend (the Christmas Tree Shop, which surprisingly carries a ton of non-Christmas stuff!). They're about the only disposables I can recommend.

Thanks for all the replies...I picked up some Bic Hybrids at Walmart. I'm in Canada and I couldn't find some of the other razors mentioned here.

I always liked the wilkinson sword quattro (NOT the titanium version). It was comfortable, got a good shave and for me, the cartridges lasted ages.

you can get a stack of Techs for less than many disposables - just load em up with Astras and toss em as you are done!!! : )

I've bought Bic Metals at Bed, Bath and Beyond (those with an expanded Shave Aisle only) and CVS drugstores. Never actually shaved with one, I wound up PIFing them away.

The Bic Metals are the only disposable razor I've seen mentioned on B&B that is consistently recommended, since they are a single-blade disposable, not a multi-blade. Around $2 for a pack of 5, everyone should keep a few packs around to take traveling, since they are TSA carry-on
    approved.

Incidently, the Metal refers to the straight bar guard on the head ... the handle is plastic.
