CO Bigelow bay rum when they still made it. Since it is discontinued it has become outrageously expensive. I still have a unopened bottle in reserve.
Oh and Ogallala bay rum, limes and peppercorns

I used to love Royall Bay Rum but reading the reviews on Amazon it looks like they cheapened the product so badly that it just doesn't pay to use it any more.
I know I'm in the minority here, but I find the Ogallala smells a bit soapy. Great fan of Pinaud and Masters, though.
Bigelow Bay Rum all the way. Too bad they discontinued it. It's lighter on the cloves, with a little citrus. Wonderful smelling.
Il faut reculer pour mieux sauter.
I like Ogallala, Bay Rum, Bay Rum, Lime and Peppercorns, and The Clubman versions as my favorites
De gustibus non est disputandum
I find Ogallala & Masters have a sweet - artificial scent. I have a bottle of Barbershop handmade on my shopping list. It sounds like it is really well made. http://barbershopshaving.blogspot.com/
I have tried Ogallala, ogallala double strength, ogallala lime / peppercorn, and with sandalwood. They smell divine, but they don't have the "bracing" factor I like, and don't last that long.As for the "sting" factor, I don't consider it masochistic, i just appreciate the "zap" of an alcohol-based a/s (insert alcoholic joke here). Ogallala is literally just the bay rum oil mixed with witch hazel, which is why it layers when you let it sit for a while. I've heard about Dominica, Royall, and some of the other cheesy ones from the 70's (pashana?, sp?). I have concluded that Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum is the shi....stuff. It has heavy clove I agree, but good lord - that spicey smell (especially layered with a little clubman original) is best used as the instructions say: all over, generously, as a body splash, aftershave, or even late in the day (whatever that means). I broke down and ordered the jumbo bottle of the V.I. bay rum as well as the entire line up (including the veg!). That's enough aftershave for a couple of years, for 45 bucks (free shipping). I am sold on clubman scents and want to give all of them a thorough try (even the vegetal). If you like bay rum, you have to try the clubman v.i. BR. I think I've made my point.
Love the CO Bigelow Bay Rum, it was my first bay rum aftershave and I think one of the top two I have. They don't make it anymore so yo umight get lucky and find one somewhere. Love the Ogallala by rum and sandalwood also, lots stronger than the co bigelow. Tried the original Ogallala bay rum this morning and wow, thought I had napalm thrown at my face! What few small weepers I had were cauterized in a flash! Like the scent so much I might just put up with it but dang, I've never had a burn like that.

I got the sampler of the St. John's BR and thought it was awsome!
Received the Ogalalla Sampler the past weekend. First time I am using Bay Rum. Tried the Lime and Peppercorns. It is fantastic. Can't wait to try the others - though my sniff test is urging me to keep my expectations moderated!!!
I recommend Lucky Tiger Bay Rum, which isn't a traditional scent by far. It was my first bay rum and I thought that if all bay rum smells this nice, I'd buy one of each kind.
Well to my disappointment, real bay rum smells like... an Indian or Middle Eastern restaurant. It's not offensive and after a while it's pleasant enough but smelling like a kitchen isn't very manly in my mind.
The Lucky Tiger bay rum, smells like pure Pimenta Racemosa (or at least what I'd imagine it would)... It has a citrusy cologne type smell, almost artificial... taking a whiff of it reminds me a bit like hair spray but in a good way.
Certainly worth a try, IMO. I like it the best of the ones I have (Gabels, Master, Stephans and Pinaud VI), it has decent staying power... Stephan's scent almost disappears as soon as you put it on but has a nice mild aroma. Pinaud is almost pure clove... reminds me of the rice my mother makes. Gabels is very strong stuff and has quite a nice burn but not nearly as bad as Pinaud's. To me it smells like Mexican food... strong scent of cumin or corriander or something. It has good staying power. The Master is the most sweet smelling.. very cinnamony, plus it has glycerin in it, so it's good for your skin but it makes your face sticky. It seems to last a little less than Lucky Tiger and quite a bit more than Stephan's. Pinaud is the king when it comes to long lasting scent... I can still smell it for hours after application.
HOW DARE YOU!!!! I work in a kitchen lol! But seriously, yeah smelling like a kitchen is not something you want lol.
I love a couple of bay rums...The first one I had was Superior 70, quite a few people have mentioned this and it is quite good. However, the one that I have found to be the best thus far...Captain Pre-Capsize's bay rum. It is great. It is a little lighter, the scent doesn't stick around quite as long as some others, but it is intoxicating...And the ladies love it too ;) . Worth a try, PM him I am just about to buy a bottle myself ;) .
Ogallala Bay Rum sample for $1 plus their shave soap sampler for $5.95...Just ordered mine! http://www.ogallalabayrum.com/

In the warm months I cannot get enough of the Masters. In winter the Ogallala just smells so right (and oddly comforting, in a fresh-baked-cookie sort of way).
The Pinaud does not like me, nor I it. The burn I get intensifies over time and feels more like a chemical burn than an alcohol burn, even if used lightly.

I'm still relatively new to this rodeo, but I picked up a bottle of Master Bay Rum at Sally Beauty Supply today just to give it a spin. I'll report back when I've tried it a few times, but since it will be my first BR experience, I won't have anything to compare it to.
Cheers!
Just "a few" drops? No need to get technical and measure it? The Africare brand 100% glycerine they also sell?
The hot chick at the local Sally's had no clue what I was talking about when I asked if they had Masters, but I did find the Superior 70 at Walgreens. Thought I'd give it a go since the price is right and I dig me some Bay Rum.
fwiw, I've only tried St. Lucia and Dominica. Also Clubman and Lustray that my barber keeps for resell. I actually liked the heavy clove scent of the Clubman the best, I just can't get past the burn.
I picked up some Masters Bay Rum at Sally's on Friday from the heavily tattoo'd and pierced girl...
I bet they have it at yours--I think it's a normally stocked item, however you have to look for it. It's not like they have a big men's care section...
BTW, I like the Masters, but I don't have a ton of experience with Bay Rums in general, so nothing really to compare it to. From what I've heard, it's not the best in the eyes of many here at B&B, but it rates as a good product.
Cheers!
I have noticed this too. This stuff burns a lot. I still use it, but I was so surprised at that burn. I also have Ogallala Bay Rum with sandalwood. I love it and the way it makes my skin feel. I've thought about getting some different bay rums. But I also think I need to get some non bay rum scents. haha.
