Lightbulb Need a New Dress Watch

    B&B,

My "court watch" recently broke (not a huge deal - it was less than $50) and I'm looking for a replacement. I'd welcome some suggestions based on a few requirements:

    1. The watch HAS to be as conservative/boring/formal as possible.
    2. The face must be white.
    3. The band must be black leather or easily changed to black leather.
    4. Must be <$200 (still paying for law school ).

I've found a likely candidate, but I'm not opposed to stepping up in quality.

    Thanks in advance!

Christopher Ward makes some very nice dress watches at a reasonable price. I think he has a few near your range if you're ok with quartz. He runs sales every so often as well.

My brother (also an attorney) has one of those and wears it as his "court watch." I like it a lot but I already followed him to law school, I'd never hear the end of that.

    I like your style.

    Thanks. :-)
alternatively, you could go for this. I got this model before it said "classic" on it and when they were still Swiss Made. It's very classy. I think they still use ETA mvts, but are no longer assembled in Switzerland.

Have a look at Parnis watches. They use Chinese movements, so the cost is quite low, but they actually get good reviews on the watch forums. I really like the look of their black faced flieger styles, but they make some nice looking white faced models that fit your description and budget.

Will this classic Braun (which is now reissued) do?

This one's on metal, but there's also black.

Check out the Tissot Visodate. It's a little more expensive than you've budgeted for, but it ticks all the boxes and is a step up in quality from all those suggested above with a Swiss automatic movement. Available on brown or black deployant strap.

That looks great, definitely placed into consideration.

Wow! Now that is a handsome watch. I knew I'd end up being tempted.

Why do court watches have to be boring?? Is it a rule or something??

I think he meant conservative and classic. My guess is a 55mm bling watch doesn't send the right message.

Also, you can get a bit more watch for your money if you consider buying something pre-owned. Watchuseek is a great watch forum with a classified section.

Take your wish list and hit the local pawn shops, you might be pleasantly surprized to be able to get exactly what you are looking for at a bargain (especially if the watch has sat on their shelf for a few weeks).

My vote goes to a Citizen Eco-Drive Stiletto. I'd post a pick, but they still drown their website with Flash. If you look around, you should be able to find one for less than $200.

    Timex.

... or something similar. You can get an inexpensive-but-decent watch for a low price nowadays. Forget about "keeping up with the Joneses Esq." until you have disposable income to throw around on toys and trophys.

As long as your watch is 'boring' ... ie proper dress watch, as you describe (good choice, btw) ... then no one will give it a second glance, or care whether it's a $100 watch or a $200 watch or a $2,000 watch. Well, if it's a $2,000 watch, and you're a 'new' lawyer, they'll assume you either have a rich daddy, or are a 'poser' with poor money management skills.

Best to buy an inexpensive watch.
Be there or be square. Only I can do both!
I've got a cat named Beefeater and a dog named Beefeater, and two goldfish called Beefeater and Beefeater. There's Beefeater my hamster and Beefeater my horse, and my piglet, known as Beefeater of course.
