Savile Row 3128

I love this brush--the shape is simply optimal. Grateful thanks to Charles at QED, whose advice was spot-on, and to Ron, whose appreciation for his own 3128 motivated me to acquire this beauty. The Savile Row silvertips are truly sublime!

Beautiful brush Phil. I have the slighly smaller brother, the 3126, and it is wonderful. The only reason I didn't buy the 3128 is Ron beat me to it and I couldn't wait until Charles got another one in! Enjoy

Thank you for your kind words, Roughrider and Kujo! I'm looking forward to testing this beautiful thing against my new Simpsons CH1 Super, when it arrives in two weeks. I have already determined that this Savile Row wildly out-lathers both my Kent BK4 and my Vulfix #41, two wonderful brushes that nonetheless feel rather floppy when compared to the SR 3128. I like soft brushes; this one is very soft at the tip, but stiff enough along its bristle shafts to ideally stimulate the beard; it really has design integrity. There are other fine choices, to be sure, but this brush is truly first-rate.

Dumb, repetitive and rehashed question:

Are the Saville Rows similar to Shavemacs?

I'm only moments from buying one of the two..........can't decide which, as SBAD worsens, it tends to make decision-making tough.........I'm quite sick

BTW, I'm a 120+ poster on another shave forum and have really enjoyed/benefited from B&B, as well..........mainly as a lurker/non-posting member. I just found out about B&B later on and haven't been posting as much over here, but I appreciate the chance to be a contributing member and look forward to more posts in the future!

Welcome to B&B. It's great to have you here.

Many people speculate that SR brushes are made by Shavemac. I think Ron might know the answer.

First: thank you, Austin!

Second: Not a dumb question at all, RW--you're merely probing what we all have been thinking for some time now.... I suggest a call to the always helpful--and cagey--Charles at QED. He will not outright tell you who makes his beautiful Silvertip line, but he will explain why his Savile Row brushes perform as well as they do. Charles is a terrific guy, honest and straightforward in his business practices, and thoroughly knowledgeable about the products he sells (the guy has handled every brand you would care to mention). What I like about the Savile Row models has to do with constancy. The line is clean and elegant: traditional white handles in attractive shapes. Shavemac makes brilliant stuff, but the sheer variety of what is available from Bernd is daunting. I own one of their olive wood handle brushes, and it's a beauty, but Savile Row presents a tasteful alternative that prioritizes content. Charles will tell you that he specifies only the best badger hair, and that his SR line is customized to his own standards. Now that I own one his brushes, I can assure you that the fellow ain't blowing smoke. And do remember that QED is only two to three days away by Priority Mail, which is considerable incentive in my experience.

Thanks, chaps, for the great welcome and awesome advice. I emailed Charles at QED and he informed me thoroughly on the SR brushes. Your advice regarding the fast shipping is great, as well, because I'm quite impatient

Although I would like one of the new series 3 silvertip SR brushes from QED, I like the handle better on the series 2 SRs. I also think the Shavemac handles are very unique and quite nice. So the biggest decision-making factors for me are:

1) Highest quality for a decent price of the SR 3/ fast shipping
2) Lower quality of the SR2, but with nicer handle (IMHO) / much lower price/ fast shipping
3) Slightly higher price of Shavemac/ great handles/ slow shipping

In the end, I still have no idea

I do know this: I WILL be purchasing one of these "stiffer/soft/bulb top" brushes very soon. I am not going to go huge, either, btw. I think 25mm knot is my limit, as I'd like to stay around $100.

The 2-series used to be made by Vulfix--now whether that still holds true....

Just to clarify - Shavemac ships incredibly fast... usually the day you order - and IF customs doesn't mess with it, it will arrive quite quickly actually - however most of my brushes from Shavemac have been caught up in customs, and that sometimes can be a PITA. Usually it is just an extra 3-5 day wait, but I suppose it depends which state you are in as well.

A brush you may with to consider is this SR3824 as it meets your "below 25mm" requirement, and it has a very handsome, yet highly ergonomic/practical handle. Any of the brushes you mentioned however, will provide you with a varitable lifetime worth of enjoyable shaving lather - so you really cannot go "wrong" per se. If you want a "softer" brush, the SR208 is your ticket, if you want a firmer brush that will allow for more of a "scrubbing" action (whilst being soft at the tip) the shavemac/qed silvertip brush is your ticket.

One thing to consider.... Richard ordered a Savile Row "stock" model, and had it "custom ordered" to have a tortoise handle. I am sure if you desired (and are/were able to wait a week or two) Charles could have a faux tortoise (see below) or faux horn handled Savile Row made for ya!
