Custom soaps I have been making that "react" with steel....

Gents,
Apparently there is a lot of interest in the shaving soaps I have been making for myself (See thread here) so I figured I would post a little pictorial on some of the cool things these soaps "do" compared to others.

Here goes....

After a few stirs... looks quite odd eh? Not very impressive yet, no?

Keep stirring and this happens.....

Still looks kind of airy and not overly impressive, no? Well - here's why... it is designed for your FACE, not for your bowl, and once it comes into contact with your bodys natural oil on your face... have a look at this....

OK - now part II. The steel/razor coming into contact with the feather blade for which it was designed for....

Feather blade dipped right into the lather....

As it starts to react, it slowly attacks the lather. If you give it a little assistence and pull it away from the lather, it pulls away VERY clean...

Eventhough the blade was very much dipped into the lather, almost nothing is on the blade/steel, as the two repel one another....

I pulled the blade out, and in the time it took to photograph it close up, you can see basically all of the lather = gone. Also, take note of the discoloration on the holder (metal) part of the razor, and you'll see, especially towards the tip of the blade (which had the biggest "dip" in the lather) the filmy/glossy residue of lubricant.

Basically, when you put the blade to your face, and take a stroke with the razor, at the BLADE level, it is reacting with the lather and breaking it down/repelling it, to get to the thinnest layer of lubricant, to insure a tremendously close shave. The thick "fluffy" lather however on the "holder" of the blade, keeps the rest of the razor far enough from your face to prevent you from cutting TOO close, and contains/holds your beard "trimmin's"

Here is an example - Notice the beard refuse in the lather after a stroke was taken, yet on the blade aside from the beard refuse, there is little to no lather, and there certainly is no "mound" of lather on the blade, thus allowing the blade to get much closer than usual.

I thought I knew how to lather with a brush until I saw those pics. Time to go to the tutorials.......where I should have gone from the start. I guess doing something for 30+ years doesn't assure that you are doing it right.
