Thread: Strange find...

    Default Strange find...

I saw a DE in an antique store today that had a handle which was about the diameter of a roll of quarters.. there was a clicking adjustment on the end which seemed to function almost like a torque wrench in adjusting the 'tightness' of the blade holder (it was a 3 piece razor).

Any ideas what it might be?

    Was it something like this...

If so, that is a Stahly live blade razor. The knob at the bottom actually winds up and creates a vibration that supposedly improves the shave (think of a back-in-the-day version of a Fusion power razor).

If that's not what it was, I have no idea, and it sounds strange.

Oops! I see maxman and I posted at exactly the same time.

I actually saw a very nice cased one in an antique store the other day that I passed on. I had wanted one, but I didn't really think I would use it. I don't know if the mechanism was faulty, but the vibration after the wind up was very weak. I was not impressed even though it looked very cool.

Without seeing it and knowing the condition along with does it have a case, papers etc......best anyone can do is guess.

If we are talking just the razor with good plating and it will dance around while standing on the handle after it is wound up......

I would think somewhere in the twenties might be fair. I have found them cased locally for less, but I feel like I've have had more than good luck at times.

Anyone got better ideas for GS4?

Oh and forgive my manners but Welcome to B&B if no one has already.

As a veteran of the Stahly pass-around that recently completed, I can tell you that if you can get it for under $30, you should buy it just for the head alone. The Stahly head is engineered in a unique way, and produces a marvelous shave. I found that it likes to be paired with sharp, aggressive blades like Feather and Astra, but it produces a pretty mild, irritation free shave. You can fit the Stahly head on other handles ... I use mine on a cooncatbob Bull Mastiff.

The vibrating handle is a cute novelty, but really doesn't add much to the shave. The handle is relatively lightweight compared to the mass. Each windup of the handle will give enough vibration for one pass, and even though its still got some energy left in the spring, you need to re-wind it to get the full effect.

I recently found my first Stahley but haven't tried it out yet. I have heard that they shave really well.
