Jim Beam Black Double Aged 8 Year

As I expand my list of vices, I decided to try bourbon. I read some good reviews of Jim Beam and got a decent deal on a bottle of Jim Beam Black. I don't claim to be an expert at describing all of the variations in taste profiles, I just know I liked the way it tastes. I tried it neat, with a few ice cubes, and with some water added. Each provides a slightly different experience, but my favorite is with just a splash of water.

Any other opinions on Jim Beam Black or suggestions for further experiementation?

Jim Beam Black is ok. It really doesn't taste like other bourbons, imo.

Elijah Craigh is a pretty decent and cheaper bourbon. I'm partial to Knob Creek and Jefferson's myself. They'll probably run you about $25-$35 for a fifth.

Jim Bean Black is my favorite bourbon. It is smooth and strong.

Due to the impressive volume of bad influences here on B&B (you know who you are!), I decided to give bourbon a go, as the only brown whiskey I've consumed since college 30 years ago has been scotch. I bought bottles of Bulleit (bourbon and rye), Jim Beam Black, Jim Beam Rye, and Black Maple Hill. All are delicious neat, or with a tiny splash of water to open up the nose, and I rate the JB Black just a little bit behind the Black Maple Hill, at less than half the price, and I put Black Maple Hill right up there with Pappy's Family Reserve 15.

Had a couple fingers of JB Black last night, in fact. Very nice.

Beam Black IMO is a great inexpensive Bourbon. Buffalo Trace is another excellent price point choice. I just finished off a bottle of Van Winkle 12 year old lot B last night....very smooth almost "light" tasting. It's a great time to be a whiskey drinker, tons of great choices out there. DD

I picked up a bottle of Beam Black a few weeks back and I won't be buying another. It just does not have the complexity one would expect after 8 years in the barrel.

I am, as usual, currently working on a bottle of JB black. It's a great bargain and well thought of by many. I prefer to take mine on the rocks (not too many rocks) and let the melting ice provide the "splash", a habit I picked up drinking single malt whisky.

Welcome to the world of bourbon! Beam Black is one of my favorites and a huge improvement over the white label.

I'd also recommend Benchmark as a great everyday bourbon. It's the same mash as Buffalo Trace, but only aged four years. It has a bit of bite, but it's DIRT cheap. You really can't come anywhere close to beating it for the price.

Corner Creek is my probably my favorite bourbon overall. It has a very interesting, complex, smokey flavor. It's been described as a scotch drinker's bourbon with good reason. Baker's (not Maker's...) is another great pick. In fact, the whole Jim Beam Small Batch Collection (Baker's, Booker's, Basil Hayden's, and Knob Creek) is worth a try.

Don't recall Corner Creek from this thread. I'll have to look it up, though I'll bet I have to wait until my next trip to Atlanta to find it. I don't think I recall seeing it here in Alabama. Will definitely try the Small Batch gang, too.

Corner Creek can be hard to find. Definitely scoop up a couple bottles when you see it. I guarantee they won't last long.
