Campsite shaving

I'll be heading into the woods for an extended weekend. I'll have access to fresh water, but not actual plumbing. What do I need to bring to get a decent campsite shave?

I just returned from a 2 day camping trip and this was the method I used.

No shave for 2 days

Rush home and have a great shave

I'm going by all of the westerns I've seen.

You need a campfire, a pot full of water (put it on the fire), and a wash basin.

You know how to do the rest.

I agree. Camping is for fires, smores, hiking, relaxing. When I go on a camping weekend I don't care what I look like. Go for the Grizzly Adams look!

After three days of camping, I LOVE to get a good shave. Unless you have a sharp axe, do what was suggested earlier, and bring your nicest smelling shave cream and brush and see what other campers ask you about it. Be sure to use a straight razor for the added affect of masculinity.....

Whatever you do, don't bring any shaving supplies that smell good. You know, something a bear might think is food. Could make for an interesting weekend; something to tell the grandkids about.

While funny, I'd go for a straight shave while camping. Not for reasons of looking spiffy, but rather just to experience a real old school style frontier shave

I just got back from a 4 day backpacking trip. And let me tell you, that first shave after it all was an *incredible* shave.

Do yourself a favor: Relax, smoke a cigar and forget shaving. No need while you're camping. Leave the domestication for home. I promise that first shave will be great.

I agree. You are camping. No need to shave!

Whenever I go camping, it is usually an extended backpacking trip (4 + days, like Zach's). Shaving supplies will only slow me down, not to mention attract bears. I've seen bears in the distance while hiking. Wouldnt want one of those suckers anywhere near my campsite.

Just come back with some scruff, like a true mountain man.

No need to shave while camping.

Bring a razor and a non-lathering cream that you can apply with you hand, then boil up some extra water when you make breakfast and use it when shaving. A mirror is really not needed.
I like starting the day feeling fresh even when camping and stubble is itchy the first days

I agree that the easist thing is to forgo shaving for the duration.

If you do decide to shave, the brushless cream is the best way to go - you don't want to lose your brush (or bring a cheap brush that you wouldn't mind losing).

While I think that the smell of the real food you are taking with you is more likely to attract a bear than your shaving cream, a sweet shaving cream might attract bugs, so I would stick with unscented or something like a mint/menthol.

As for the razor, I would suggest going with a disposable razor that comes with some sort of removable blade guard.

Take a straight. Perhaps a hone or two in case it's dull. And a pasted paddle strop for the same reason. And a hanging strop, because you got to strop it normally as well. And a scuttle, you want to have a scuttle. And a lathering bowl, you can't lather in a scuttle, unless you get one of Oscar's big scuttles. And a few tubs of cream so you have something to choose from, don't put them in sample jars, much too finicky. A good brush... Kent's come in those nice red tubes, that'd be perfect for travel. And then some aftershaves and EdTs, don't decant, it's too finicky.

Yeah, I think that should do it. For a short trip.

It's not the creams themselves that will attract bears (assuming you know what you're doing and hoist that stuff at night along with your food in bear-ridden areas), it's the scent of the cream (or the deoderant, or the aftershave, or the EdT) on your body that piques the curiousity of the hungry bruins.

If I felt that it was absolutely imperative that I shaved in the bush, I think I would go with an unscented soap in shave-stick form, rub it on, hand lather with hot water, and do a very light one or two pass job with the razor.

And I would take a DE. Your friends will beat you when you pull out an M3 in the middle of the woods..

I made fun of my wife when she brought make up on on our first camping trip together. She'd never let me live it down if I brought shaving supplies.
Go enjoy the outdoors and enjoy shaving when you get back home.

I generally go two or three days without a shave on a camping trip, but on the week long trips I so shaggy that it's uncomfortable. And difficult to remove when I get back. So I might pack along a razor and shave two or three times during the week using Pack Soap, which provides enough lubrication to get the job done.
