Default Recomment me a Shu from JAS-etea

I recently tried a sample of the Dante Puerh from Adagio (came in a black tea sampler), and discovered that I probably might enjoy getting into this whole world of ripe puerhs.

That having been said, I haven't a clue of what to look for, despite my seeing it referenced so often in this fine forum.

    What would you recommend?

I'll second those; the Hong Yun being cleaner and the V93 being a little more complex. I have a tuo from '06 of the V93 that I pick a little off of from time to time, and if it's any indication, the '08 will be even better in a few years.

Of items that are still actually available...

These two are lightly fermented, so probably not quite like the Dante, but they represent the best bang for buck quality/opportunity cost-wise...

2008 Dayi Hong shu. Made of Mengsong and Nannuo sheng

2009 Yun Ding "Cloud Atlas". High mountain stuff. Yes, I trashed it, but it's not that bad, and everything better at around that price has sold out.

My favorite ripe is Menghai 8592.

You can't go wrong with the Hong Yun or the V93. I do prefer the Menghai 7572 though. The 7452 is pretty good as well.

I would buy two or three....Hong Yun, V93 and a larger bing. That way you will have enough to last and several to contrast against the other.

The 09 Menghai Dayi Gong is one of my favorite Menghai ripe pu-erh but it sold out and replacements are currently in transit from China. The Summit ripe pu-eh tea is another favorite but is a little pricey. However, if you do the calculation on a per cup basis, it is still a steal compared to Starbucks coffee prices.

You're kidding! I only mentioned those because I thought it would be a good idea to start with 100g tuos in case he didn't like them. I always said a bing is a sample, but no sense getting a huge amount of an unknown- those little tuos are terrific.

I'd also recommend ODB, aka the Xiaguan Baoyan brick. That thing is practically shu anyway.
