  1. Default New Guy's Kit... Check out the gear... There's always gear...

Wandered into the world of safety-razor shaving on the advice of a friend who happens to be a dermatologist, as well as a closet shaving weirdo. Like any guy, I like me some new shiny gear, so putting together a kit was fun... Thought I'd post it here- comments and snarky remarks welcome.

    Merkur Futur razor

    Merkur Futur badger hair brush

    Matching Merkur stand

Some soap which I know nothing about beyond the fact that the can looks cool, and it had good customer reviews

That's the best starter kit I've ever seen. You're off to a great start.

Welcome! Make sure to pick up a blade sampler!
Now that you've got that Merkur, you can avoid RAD (Razor Acquisition Disorder...)
That'll be a great looking set to leave out and impress haha

Good luck avoiding the AD with a board full of enablers!

Welcome, I got that razor as my first one and really haven't felt the need to buy any other razors, when it comes to soap/cream/aftershave though, WATCH OUT!

How do you like that brush? I almost bought that set but ended up just going for the razor and getting some other (non-matching) components. Enjoy your new shaving :) .

What do you have for beginner blades? My personal opinion is that the Merkur blades should be avoided.

My advice on the Futur would be to make sure the blade holder is fully seated when it's at its lowest setting (< 1).

I started w/ a Merkur HD and found that when I switched to the Futur I got a HORRIBLE shave...not nearly as close or smooth. I read a few posts on disassembly of the Futur and tightened the head which seated the blade holder flush against the guard. Adjusted it up to "2" and put in a fresh blade and "presto" my shaves are now awesome!!
