Badger brush in a point?

I was talking to my dad the other day and we got on the topic of shaving. We were talking about badger brushes and my dad mentioned my grandfather likes his brushes to come to a point when he's using them.

Is this a common technique?
Is there any benefit to this?

I'm not sure what he means by that...

A bulb shaped knot maybe? I prefer those.

The brush will also form a fan shape if you use it to "paint" lather across your face (I do this extensively on my neck, forming a kind of ridge out of the bristles).

As I understood it (and I can verify) he likes to take the brush and make a fine point out of the tip something along the lines of /\

I think he was using a paint brush.

He must have meant something else...or it lost it's meaning in translation...a point knot especially on a smaller brush is a most miserable face-lathering experience...keeps pricking you when you sweep or switch sides...
