Well, I put down the money for my first straight today. I've been shaving with a DE for around 8 months or so, but have always been attracted to the straights. Let's hope I don't cut my carotid

Just take your time, and enjoy it. You dont need to conquer the universe - just shave your cheeks, finish up with a DE, and then celebrate!

Appreciate the warm welcome, gents. I purchased the Not a Replica razor from Baxter and their 2" leather strop as well.

It can be done, but my suggestion is no. Give it at least a month. And, initially when learning to hone, I'd advise that you only do touch-ups. There are several people who have been at this for a while who will gladly hone for a new person for only the cost of shipping (and sometimes not even that) and are reputable. (I certainly would offer myself, but I am uncertain about whether I'm moving in the next month or not, so right now is a not a good time for me.) Once you have straight razor shaved for a couple months (more if you wish), I recommend learning to hone. On the other hand, I think that knowing to hone for oneself is an essential skill to eventually have as a straight razor user.

I did not. I figured I already spent enough I'd hold out on the hone
